Well, I finally got to witness the new lineup last night at Glasgow's Clyde auditorium (or armadillo as it's known as up here. The support band Periphery a shouty thrash metal band from Maryland were very disappointing. I'm guessing they didn't get much time to soundcheck as the bass was inaudible and the three guitars just washed each other and the vocals out. Their style isn't my kind of music but at least I stuck them out. many in the audience left to go to the bar. Dream Theater, in total contrast were superb. The balance across the whole band was almost perfect, the only criticism being Myung's usual lack of volume (although he was louder than at previous gigs I've seen). James labrie complained of having a cold but he managed just about all his high vocals with apparent ease. One highlight was an acoustic section in which James and petrucci sat at the front and played Silent man and Far from heaven. The eye opener for most of the audience was Mike Mangini - he fits in the so well with the band you'd have thought he'd always been the drummer. He played a 10 minute solo in the first half that had the whole audience begging for more and really demonstrated his technical prowess and stamina. Half his kit is above his head so his arms must be aching at the end of a gig. Quite a lot of the set was taken from the new album but they slotted in a fair few classics too. They really pleased the crowd by playing Pull me under for the encore that left the whole room chanting for more (my mate came up from newcastle to see them and he's heading down to Manchester today to see them again tonight - lucky beggar). If you've been humming and ha-ing about whether to accept the band without Portnoy, I can say without hesitation that they were the best and happiest I've seen them in at least ten years. Graeme |

They were awesome in Houston! I agree, John Myung's bass is never loud enough! Although I will say that his sound on A Dramatic Turn Of Events is the best I have heard him. He needs an Alembic that will cut through all the drop "D" songs & stand out! |

Thanks for the reviews; and glad to hear that Mangini is fitting in so well. |
