I spent my lunch hour looking at youtube posts of the Who playing "My Generation" and noticed that on many of them, the cameras ignore John Entwistle while he solos; focusing on Keith Moon & Pete Townshend. It seemed only the later 70's & 80's performances focused on the bassist during his epic solo. VMG |

Such is the fate of the great majority of bassists. Sigh. |

Well virtuoso bass playing was resigned to the jazz guys back then, the electric bass player in the 60's was the guy who played root 'thump thump' notes...thank the stars for The Ox,Larry Graham, Stanley, Jaco, Mark King,Marcus Miller and all the others too. |

Back in the day when camera crews were not always in verbal communications via a headset with a director there was not always someone to tell them "pan to stage left and zoom in on the Bass Player"_______ |

Some of the most disturbing videos are of Led Zeppelin. I don't want to look at Robert Plant's crotch when Jimmy is jamming. Forget about seeing that triple Omega! Also, you gotta love watching Hendrix's strumming hand instead of his fretting hand where all of the interesting stuff is happening. |

This band is a perfect example of the cameras usually focusing on something pretty to look at and not at the instrumentalists: Jefferson Airplane. And it's pretty ironic that the bass player, Jack Casady, was at the forefront of changing the role of bass guitar in popular music while that was going on. The film from the Monterey Pop Festival was a perfect example, if memory serves. Here's a cool clip with some great bass action. I heard it was VERY cold that day, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLRX7bZH41g (Message edited by benson_murrensun on March 01, 2012) |
