It seemed only the later 70's & 80's performances focused on the bassist during his epic solo. And it's pretty ironic that the bass player, Jack Casady, was at the forefront of changing the role of bass guitar in popular music while that was going on. The film from the Monterey Pop Festival was a perfect example, if memory serves. Here's a cool clip with some great bass action.
