There is also the issue that besides having possible inherent design flaws. many of the 'Smart Meters " have been installed in a less then professional manner by a sub- contractor using personnel with inadequate experience and training in order to cut costs of installation . The disastrous results are numerous including fires ! There is a serious problem here ______

Hey Wolf,
I am currently working as a Field Supervisor for the Smart meter
Program in Oz.
Here we only use qualified A Grade electricians.
In my network we have identified over 15000 potentially hazardous
Faults that either put at risk the owners or the properties. These faults are fixed
Free of charge to the consumer including such things as switchboard
Upgrades, service upgrades, mains upgrades not to mention
Repairing other people's (including so-called licenced electricians) shoddy sub-standard and non compliant wiring and jobs.
Using sub- contractors is a cheap alternative to employees and the
Subbies try to install as many meters as they can to make ends meet.
I have fired 3 blokes for not testing the installation post exchange and my guys know that I will not stand for any
Shortcuts digressed from procedure.
There is a one strike policy for not sticking to procedure.
Maybe I should go back to the US and show how's it is done.

Bonus is I will be closer to the mother ship

Slawie , I am very please that you are seeing to have this done right .SADLY __________ PG&E in California used Wellington Energy who hired people at low wages who didn't really have a clue (at the disastouous result and suffering of good folks here in California who were at their mercy)
with no prior electrical experience and gave them a 2 week training class on how to install the "Smart Meters " In many cases when the residents were not at home they proceeded to remove the old analog meters that were under load conditions. IT Servers ,Refrigerators. Air conditioners and any thing that utilizes DSP ( digital signal processing ) was ruined from the surges cause by lack of experience or general knowledge of electrical work or electronics by these installers. The fellow that showed up at my house told me that he was going to upgrade my electrical service and that I would be with out power for about just 10 minutes . " Wait one minute " I said " then I ask "is the procedure that you are going by consistent with the NEC ( National Electrical Code) " his answer ,:" What's that ? " " What is NEC ?" OH NO I was thinking ! Then I ask is there something that you would like to ask me ? I was thinking he at least can see that my service does not have an external shut off but only a meter on the out side , the shut off is on the inside by the panel ( I do not have what an electrician calls an " All in one " on the out side .) The Wellington guy said OH, well not really _____ Then I asked him What kind of ground termination is externally visible ? ( it is obvious that I have an 8 ' ground rod supplemental to a cold water ground) His answer _ they did not tell us about grounds ! " Should I shut off any electrical equipment " His answer NO it will go back on when I have finished" My answer " you Sir do NOT have my permission to remove my perfectly functioning analog meter , go and tell your boss and I shall tell him why ! Since then I have fought the Smart Meter program here in California ,Now we have an OPT OUT program that I am proud to have won because there REALLY is such a thing as EMR sensitivity . I experienced it as a Broadcast Technician working in a television transmitter room in the 1980's . I submitted a report to the CCST (California Coalition of Science and Technology) of my experience with RF exposure and sickness . I helped Stop mandatory "Smart Meters" in California ! I think that the wireless system that is being imposed here in the USA is highly flawed in many ways . There are better systems being used in Europe .

Wolf,
I agree with you whole heartedly about having unqualified labour installing electrical equipment. Not on my watch.

Here we use LAN freq. of 915 to 928 MHz with transmit power. Variable up to a max of a little less than 30dBm.
Modulation is FHSS. Transmitting every 4 hours of 350msec
When you consider a cell phone which transmits at probably between 300 to 500 times that output with polling rates of every 30 sec the Smart meters are equivalent power output of the key lock opener for your car.
Anyhow WiFi is an Australian invention so I cannot go dissing that ;)
I am enjoying this discussion with an educated person as opposed to my everyday dealings with Mr Joe Punter who does not have a clue.
My employees are threatened and abused both verbally and physically because of misinformation being passed on through fearmongering media outlets.
I commend you on taking a stand and making a difference.
I hope that this exercise for you does not end as a Quixotic experience.

Slawie , I share the same sentiment of this civilized conversation with you . But Quixotic ? No, I am not being over idealistic ; over here unfortunately the fires are real , the smoldering Smart Meters are real and the in many case's the physical symptoms are real that some folks are experiencing . I am all in favour of technological progress but not at the cost such exploitation and at the cost of public suffering like what we have been experiencing. What Mr. Robert States outlines in the video in my post # 2417 is real, not fear mongering. The levels of RF exposure that I experienced over 24 years ago from multiple Varian Klystron Transmitters coupled through a wave guide resulting in an Effective Radiated Power of approximately 5000 KW at 650-656 MHz had unfavorable effects on me. This of course is far less then in the Smart Meter issue , however there are folks that have a very low tolerance to RF levels and for that reason I strongly felt that the public must be given an option to OPT OUT within the confines of a Democracy.

Hey Sancho ,
No apology is necessary . As an advocate for the common
good of humanity I can't let my skin get to thin . I realize that you are doing your best vocationally at your present task. P.G&E could have used your high standards during the planing stages of their roll out or a reasonable facsimile role model to instill such excellence in their workers.

My Dad's had a rather stupid time so far with smart meters here in B.C...he's gone from owing $3000 in back hydro to a $2000 credit in about 7 months; he was actually happy to get one as they rarely check the old meters on the island he lives on so he figured that his bill would actually make sense...apparently he was wrong, and the news stories here indicate that the whole progam is flawed...but the original thrust of this thread(how DO you thrust a thread?) was the blanket of EMF fields that we're under...I've frankly never thought it was a good thing and everyone with a microwave transmitter next to their head can't be good...and the first video posted that it's all to get everything about you to those that want it...that's why I pay cash; no one needs to know how I spend my money and I don't need to have a future like 'Minority Report' where the billboards pander to me...oh, and while I don't seem to be sensitive to RF radiation I've had cancer once and I don't want any more...
