I've seen this thing advertised and endorsed most notably by Steve Bailey.Do any of the good club members own/use one of these things and how is it working out for you?I use a Pocket Rocket Pro by Ctech because it has a line out that I can hook up my CD player to but if there is a better tool for me to use out there,I'll use it.It seems I can get one for around $150. which ain't too bad at all for all that it can do.The only thing I don't see that it should do is have a metronome built in.If it doesn't,that's laughable because it seems to have everything else.Why would they leave out the most important tool every bass player,any where,should have while practicing anything on bass?When I was teaching,I hounded my students to get a metronome.Anyway,thanks in advance for the advice from all you good Alembic club members. | ||

I bought one, and IMHO, it's a great tool. There are many bass lines that I encounter that at normal speed are too complex for my ears to follow, but by using the speed control the notes are easier to understand. It has a number of effects, but since that's not my cup of tea I've never played with them. I paid $395.00 Canadian (A/C adaptor included), which translates to around $295.00 U.S. so $150.00 sounds like a great price, but make sure that you get the AC adaptor. It's eats batteries. I also have one, Ellery's assesment is good..great tool,eats batteries. You may get an hour or so from batteries. Spring for the power adapter. The speed control is nice, doesnt change actual pitch, which is handy for liberating parts. The effects are ok, I only use a bit of EQ and shut the rest off. I have seen them advertised for 140/150$. Is this the SMOKIN' DAVE from that hot little band, Kenny Brack and the SubWoofers? Dave, are YOU the subwoofer? Must be a BAD man to name the band after the bass player! Tickled that Kenny's back on his lead feet! I tried one at Sam Ash, didn't like it. I'm STILL looking for a good headphone rig. I guess I'm going to have to break down and buy a 1202 Mackie to really get a first rate headphone sound. J o e y | ||

Hey Joey, That cracks me up.The name is from the Pioneer brass who pays us our artist fee's so I can't be held responsible although it's a nice thought.Kenny is doing well and racing again but in a limited capacity.Maybe he will do a whole season next year but for now,we are busy writing material for a CD.Thanks everybody for the input on the Tascam.I may have to make the trip to Sam Ash and try out one of these things and see for myself. | ||

Dave, I started the other thread in the Club about this, and bought one. The first one I had was evidently a customer return as the bass input was very weak and the package had been opened. I got another, and it is better. However, since other folks said they had plenty of bass volume, I think I will find some better headphones to compensate. As for features, the handiest thing to me is not necessarily the slow-down feature, but the loop feature. You can endlessly loop sections of a song to learn them. The slow-down without changing pitch does work, but not very well at -50 and -32%. 8 and 16 seem fine, and that is usually enough. Above that amount and it does get digitally choppy. The biggest pain is that you need to cable up your bass, headphones, and the A/C adapter to use it, which gets kind of crowded. If you have a bass amp which has CD style line inputs to mix in, it would be a lot more convenient, without headphones. (SWR has one model, and I forget who else...) I got mine new for $150. I'd say it's really "worth" not quite that much, but I am discounting it based on the setup inconvenience-factor. If someone would package it into a bass practice amp, so much the better. Unfortunately I immediately found myself busy and haven't used it much - maybe I should sell you mine! EffClef |
