As a former Pensacola resident, it's tough to see what IVAN did to the place. That whole stretch from Panama City to Gulf Shores, Alabama are to me the prettiest beaches in Florida. And home to surely the biggest and best and overlooked aircraft museum in the USA, The National Museum of Naval Aviation, aboard NAS Pensacola.

There is terrific coverage at www.pensacolanewsjournal.com, the local paper who has LOTS of galleries of the damages.
These pictures will tell you why you NEVER want to 'ride it out'.

Having lived through Hurricane Andrew in Miami, I will vouch for your point, Joey. We so rarely see how mother nature can rip things (including almost anything we can build) up and toss them around. A serious hurricane or tornado is no joke.

I spoke with a friend yesterday that lives 20 or so miles east of Pensacola. Alot of tree damage, roof damage, carport gone, boat and 1 car gone . Luckily, no one was injured, and insurance should take care of things. And their power has already been restored. Sounds like they're on high enough ground that storm surge wasn't a problem.

Ivan missed me, I'm on the other side of Florida. Frances came calling and left me without power for 30 hours but no damage thankfully. I was one of the lucky ones. I have friends and co workers who where without power for a week or more and one who lost his home and everything in it. Again thankfully he and his family are fine.

The wife and I are heading down to Key West a week from Monday (October 4th). I have been watching the weather channel like a fiend! We were down there five years ago and got a direct hit from hurricane Irene then, so I'm hoping not to continue tradition :-)

Paul, the non-hurricane one (for now)

I really feel for the folks in Florida and Alabama on this one. We were also thinking that it may come our way (New Orleans) so we were one of the MANY families to evacuate. I was checking out some of the pics of the damage and it was amazing. I am too another person that will never try to ride out another hurricane. I have rode out many in the past, but now that I have children, I have had a change of heart. If New Orleans is to get a direct hit, they predict that there will be 20 or more feet of water in the city for weeks on end. The city is like a large bowl with water on all sides. Before we evacuated, I put all my Alembics in the attic!

Paul, Hurricane Jeanne should be past by then but no telling what kind of cleanup will be needed. I'm expecting a pretty direct hit from that one Sunday night or Monday morning. The psychologocal stress with so many back to back is exhausting.

Thanks Dave, I'm staying optimistic. We were in San Francisco for Ivan. I knew I should have stayed:-)
