Thanks guys! The 2 acoustic guitars belonged to my grandparents who taught me how to play. The seed they planted on those guitars grew into my passion on display here.  | ||

I wonder how may of us still have our first guitar/bass?. I still have my first guitar which is a really basic Kapok Spanish guitar made in China. I picked it up last week and its three neck laminates have separated at the headstock. Made me wonder if that is something that eventually happens to instruments with laminated necks. Maybe one day this summer, ( although It looks like it's about to finish already), I should try to get all my gear out to be photographed together in the garden. Basses, guitars and amps although I don't have enough stands for everything it should be an interesting task. But for now here are the first pics of my current bass family for Rusty's Family photo thread. Favorite....That's a hard one Rusty. I'd have to say a the moment it's still my SC Signature maybe because it's my first one and i can work it intuitively now and don't have to think much about getting to and from specific sounds. I think it will eventually be the series II once I can understand it. The good all rounder and one I've used the most live is the Bocate Europa 5 because the combination of standard electronics in it, and the warm wood mixture in it makes it the easiest to blend into any band because unlike the two all maple basses, the high frequencies don't punch you in the face before the note mellows out. Plus most of my gigs now require that extra string. I think I'm a 4 stringer at heart so my preference would always be to use one if the material on a gig doesn't require me to go below E. I really don't like carrying more than one bass to gigs unless it's a theatre or some other similar venue where there is good security. As for which to play. Reggae - Bocate 5 Europa Anything requiring a lot of funky slapping or double thumbing... Bocate 5 Europa Anything requiring a Fender Marcus Miller type tone... Bocate 5 Rock ( as i'm just discovering, Purple or black bass) Anything from the 70's jazz/funk etc, jeff lorber, victor Bailey, stanley clarke, return to forever stuff etc and early 80's - SC Deluxe. If there are TV camera's or other professional filming at the gig or if it's a premier venue it will be Series II hahah. Sometimes I throw all that to the wind and pick the one I've been playing most prior to the gig or one that hasn't been played in a while How do you decide which to take on your gigs? Peter, Here are the closeups of my grandparents' acoustics. I think they are both Silvertone's my grandfather bought through the Sears catalog. The smaller one has a Silvertone label inside, but the label has fallen off the larger one. They both still have the last set of strings my grandfather put on them, & he passed away in 1998, so they are pretty old! I would love to give them a thorough cleaning & oil the necks & put new strings on, but I like having them preserved the way they were the last time my grandparents played them. You can still see the pick stuck under the truss rod cover where my grandfather put it the last time he played the guitar! The action on the large one is incredible! It plays like a Strat!     | ||

Jazzyvee, you are a man after my own heart! My SCSD is by far my favorite & although it is my only Alembic, like you, even if I had more it would still be my favorite. My 1st Alembic was an early 80's Series 1 which I sold, but the whole time I had it, I really wanted the small body Stanley, so my SCSD will always be my favorite bass. As for which basses I bring to the gigs, I just bring the SCSD & my Jazz bass. I only use the Jazz for a couple of drop "D" tuned songs so I don't have to retune my Alembic. I thought about getting a 5 string, but I can't play them! I'm a traditionalist & 4 strings is plenty for me! I admire 5 string players, but I don't see myself ever being one. | ||

Decided to update my profile pic, and made a small collage as well, (of my past and current Alembics) Looking to take a nice "family pic" of all my gear next time its sunny out. By the way, whats the best way to upload a large image to the board? I brought this one down all the way to 72 dpi, less than 500 pixels width, and the file was still too large to upload. How can I make the dimensions large enough for a decent image size while keeping the files under 150k? Anything less than 72 resolution will look crumby on screen correct?  | ||

I can usually get images up to 800 pixels wide at 72 dpi (all you need to display on a monitor), just reduce the jpg quality some. I usually use 8, which is still very high. If you drop it to 7 you should be good to go. | ||

Sam I love the Rogue and it's still my goto bass for gigs.I picked up a Stanley Sig off another club member but it's too nice for bar gigs.Also after playing Fenders for years the Rogue feels "right" for me. | ||

I tried out one of the Victor Bailey (fretted) basses a couple of years ago at a shop in Brighton when I was down that way and I was really impressed with everything about it. I got a better sound out of it than a standard Jazz bass or a Marcus Miller Jazz bass. If i decide to add a fender bass to my collection in the future I'd certainly give that model another airing. Thanks for the compliment, J-Mic! I've owned a few other Alembics in the past, but these three are the most utilitarian (the Elan fretless in Jon's post was my first)..... As far as the "mission control" fretless, it was at Elderly several years back, and has changed hands several times since. A previous owner (12stringwilson) once said that it'll peel paint off walls, so I only play it outdoors....  |
