I just found out my custom Krappy is done, and will be headed my way this week. It's a six string, octave course, EeAaDd. Can you guess where I got my inspiration?

Very cool, James, and quite an interesting company. Hadn't heard of Krappy before. They seem to be the next step up from Wishbass. So how does it play/sound? Bill, tgo |

I will find out this Thursday or Friday, barring any unforeseen shipping mishaps. I'll let you know. |

Very cool "blood Lines". Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery! Can you give us details about the electronics such as volume only and passive, or use of dip switches to shape the tone? What about the woods used? Good luck and Hearty playing! |

very cool. i like the tuning, too. is the string spacing really wide, or is this just a really small instrument? either way, i dig it. |

I have been watching Kevin's work for a couple of years, and knew I wanted him to build something for me. I took me a while to come up with this. I have always been intrigued by his one, two, and three string basses. After playing a Hamer 8 string octave bass at Truetone, I formed this idea. Yes, the body is pretty small. The bridge is of his own making, adapted from the touch style instruments he makes. The spacing between the octave strings at the bridge is 1/4". I think that is a little wider than many production octave basses, well see how it works. I would think the strings are much tighter spaced at the nut. Kevin is known to wind his own humbucker pups, and they usually look like that, plain black with a ring. Or based on his build philosophy, it might be some no-name humbucker he found laying around. It is passive with just a volume. The woods he used were all his choice, neck of mahogany walnut and maple, body of walnut cherry and mahogany. He didn't tell me what the fingerboard is. The only thing I spec'd when I placed the order, was the number and tuning of the strings, the body shape, and the simple electronics. This may seem a little odd to those of us accustomed to an Alembic build, but Krappy Guitars has a different way of doing business. Read his manifesto at Krappyguitars.com to get an idea of what I mean. From deposit to shipment was a couple of days over two weeks, and the total cost, including shipping was $400. |

The great thing about this is you know it's Krappy right from the start, instead of paying big $$$ for an axe and finding out too late that it's really Crappy. But it gets really confusing . . . . I just came from Bass Pro Shops and they have no basses, but I did get a rig to go Crappie fishing, but it's pronounced 'crop-eee'. I should go to bed and make these posts once I'm awake . . . . I left the Little DragonWing with my luthier while I went on vacation. Fren installed a new bone nut, and basically tweaked the frets a bit. While it plays quite nicely now, it requires some significant adjustment to my technique, especially with respect to muting strings. It's a one trick pony but I really like the trick. For those who wanted to know what it sounds like, and some new pictures too, you can go here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wMZ0rMrUWk Peace, JBY |
