There is an SF-2 currently on e-bay and I was wondering if anyone has any experience using one with a guitar? (You know, those small instruments with the six skinny strings that you can play all night without getting a hernia).

Bill, the guitar one.

Brother Bill TGO

that question has been asked before and if I remember well Mica says that the tone spectrum of the SF-2 is designed to the low-side. Those six skinny strings will take lot of wheight I guess.
I don't know anybody who actually messed around with it.

Paul TBO

Mmmm ...you getting a hernia by doing things the wrong way. The cause is never in the object but in the way you treated it.
Solution: straight your back!!!!

I layed away an SF-2 yesterday, I'll pick it up in a couple of weeks. I got it with the Persuader in mind, however, my understanding is that it will work very well with guitars as well as basses.... I'll let you know when I pick it up.

Sorry I can't help you with the one on e-bay, I'm sure it'll be long sold before I pick mine up....

To quote Alembic's SF-2 (under products/preamps):

"The Super Filter has many applications. As an effector for guitar and bass, an unlimited field of both dramatic and subtle spectral effects are available. And when the direct volume control is set fully counterclockwise, the filtered signal alone directs the ear's attention to the natural-sounding filter effect, unlike an equalizer where the input signal is always supplied to the output at unity gain.

Interesting vocal effects including band limiting can be dialed in. And the opposite of the last effect can be used to extend the frequency response of closed box speaker enclosures. The Super Filter is a very useful tool."

I think that sounds like it works well with guitars too.....

It is as versitle with a guitar as with a bass. I plugged in my Strat w/ emg's and it really shimmered. I've also used it with a Paul, 7str Schecter, Mockingbird w/B Lawrence L500's and an Esquire. I was able to tweek all kinds of clean tones with all of them. I did not try it with any overdrive settings yet. I did use a digitech effects pedal and was very pleased.

Thanks everyone for your insights. I bought an SF-2 off of e-bay today. The search for that elusive perfect tone continues!

I was thinking I wanted that one, but saw your bid and left it alone. It looks like the guy that sniped the bass I wanted almost got you, too. I hope it works out for you.

Thanks Bob. I appreciate it and I owe you one. If for any reason I don't like it (probably about the same time Bush admits he made serious misjudgements, Kerry stops moving his hands when he talks, and hell freezes over), I'll give you first crack at it. Boy, I love this club!

P.S. The above was NOT a political statement. It was a JOKE. Repeat: a JOKE.

Bill, there's a $5 fine for each mention of a politician's name in this forum. Please remit $10 to the club treasurer.

Bill, there's a $15 fine for mentioning a certain club official - to be paid to yours truly.

O.K., I'll bite - who is the "club official" I mentioned? Where do I find the rules? I apologize and feel appropriately admonished. You guys can come on over and pick up the $ anytime you want. Just bring your instruments and stay and play for awhile.

Bill, seeing that you're picking up the bill for Dave, who was the one who shouldn't have mentioned said official ... apologies for getting the names mixed up - anyway thanks for the invite. I don't expect to be visiting California in the near future though - that sure is a pity.

Hey Bill,

Cool, it looks like the west coast is going to have a couple sweet guitars singing a little more sweetly (is that possible?) very soon. It'll be great comparing notes.

Hollis:

Looking forward to it.

By the way, anyone have suggestions on whether to put the SF-2 between guitar and amp, or in the amp's effects loop between pre and power amp? From what I surmise from Alembic's description, it can work either way.

I'm thinking I'll run it thru the effects loop of the F1-X for the Persuader and studio stuff, and I guess I'll run it thru the Mesa's effect's loop for the Skylark. Although I'm still gonna try running the Skylark through the F1-X and SF-2...

I suppose I could run the the Skylark through the SF-2 through the effects loop of the F1-X through the effects loop of the Mesa....

Help!

So many choices, so little left of my brain....

Hollis:

Sounds like you're getting 'loopy'. These kind of decisions can have that 'effect' on a person.

I could try and pay tribute to all of the help I have received. It is apparent that you all excel at Alembical knowledge, some of you to truly epic proportions, but I don't know if I really want to take this thread any further. (I can't believe I just wrote that. It proves it's time for me to shut down the computer and leave the office).

So I'll just sign my signature and head for my California special home.

Bill, I was being facetious; and Adriaan was responding to me in kind. Following the example of James Brown, I used to impose similar fines in the last group I was in. On stage between songs, the lead guitar player would sometimes play the first few notes of the next tune to make sure he had his effects and tone properly set up for the song. So there was a $5 fine for giving the song away. Also on stage between songs while waiting for the guitar players to tune up, the drummer would love to start in on the drum intro to Honky Tonk Woman, even though that song was not on the set list. So there was a $5 fine for that. And there were other similar fines. The fines were never collected, were instituted in a spirit of fun, and they made their point; the guitar player quit giving away the songs before we played them and the drummer quit playing the Honky Tonk Woman intro.

Dave:

All in good fun, brother, all in good fun. Pity you weren't in the Grateful Dead - you would have made millions in fines.
