I had those method books, although they did have suggestions like 'funky boogaloo here' which seemed silly to a teenager.

There are so many of those songs that CK (and so many more studio guys on bass) where the bass lines under those little 60's singles that made me have to play bass. They were serious jazz players that made these 'silly little R&R records' to pay the bills, so they could go blow 'real music' in the clubs at night (imagine Ornette Coleman 'sitting in' on one of YOUR gigs!).

These tunes will always be a yardstick in my mind. Entirely different from what followed, but very big in my past nonetheless.

And I completely agree: If I had a choice between playing with a bunch with great chops and sloppy time, or modest skills but everything and everybody on the same time, I'll ALWAYS take the latter.
