Way back when... there was the deads skull and roses album and inside it, you were given the address of the grateful dead fan club. us older folks sent in our postcard and we used to get stuff in the mail. Yup i said mail. For me it revved up in '73 just about the time they were putting out wake of the flood on there own label with the crow on it, a subliminal message to the record companies-haha. In early 1973 the dead came out with "the wall of sound" i mean it was huge BUT it wasn't loud loud. Phil's alembic bass ( as seen in the movie) was hooked up in stereo and i dont remember if it was quad or not. But this is what we got in the mail... 40 yrs later i found it in a drawer (Message edited by flaxattack on October 23, 2012) |

Cool find jeff. As Alembic were involved, i wonder if Susan had any involvement with the drawings of dragons at the top of the WOS pic. Like Sparechaynge, I'd love a photocopy of that. At my expense of course. let us know. Graeme |

Good point Jacko, I would certainly compensate for the cost of a copy and shipping. |

I have a repop of that in Fong-Torres's Grateful Dead Scrapbook; what are the dimesions of the original? Interesting to compare this '73 version with the '74 iteration of the system. (And has anybody else noticed that the Alembic/Dead scene was crawling with freakin' geniuses? ) Peter |

the artwork seems to have the initials DM so i doubt it was susan i got into the mood today listened to my 2 favorite 1973 shows back when a show was 5? hours 6/10/73-RFK stadium- which according to archives.org is the most downloaded dead show. Was at that one! Phil's famous remark "we're gonna tune up real good for this next one" -Dark Star 6/22/73 Vancouver- the absolute best he's gone truckin jam- just a wonderful show to download i will see what i can do about getting something made up for you guys. i mean its tattered, dark yellow around the edges from being on my wall 30 years ago |

I was a responder to the invitation, too, back in the day. There were other (snailmailed, paper) newsletters through that period. I'll take a look and see if I can find any of them. They were odd, often clever, but definitely strange (Who could forget the "checkered cane of hypnocracy"!!!). But, it was a decidedly different slant on the venerable "fan club" and swelled to an amazing array of communications and artwork. Cool. (Message edited by bassman10096 on October 27, 2012) |

I remember the post we received with the band took time off around '75. As I recall, they were working on a new system for recorded music where the music would be contained on a little pyramid that was read by a laser equipped player. Also, I seem to remember that Bill was working on a way to grow tons of wheat on a few square feet of land. Still waiting for both! lol Bill, tgo |

Well the little pyramid idea came and is now on the way out (essentially a CD minus the cool form factor). I also liked the idea that they were going to bypass traditional distribution concepts and have a fleet of ice cream truck style vehicles cruise the country, selling these little digital wonders. |
