when i was a kid- 1962 to be exact my elementary school had both a band and orchestra. thats when i first played bass.I was 9. went to junior high school and high school and played bass there.

i'm just wondering if regular schools (not performing arts etc)have any kind of music programs these days.

Maybe the world would be a better place if they did.

I graduated from a public high school in 2002 and was active in the concert band, jazz band, choir, marching band, pit band (drama club). There was also an orchestra, though much smaller than the concert band. My elementary school still has band, orchestra and chorus, as far as I know. All students were actually REQUIRED to take at least one music credit in my high school.

My high school has a pretty good music program, Jazz and Concert band, and a pit band for the plays. There is a music production program that was started just before i graduated, but to my knowledge it's not going well. The music & arts depts. aren't nearly as well funded as the sports or tv production programs, but there is a move to change that. I sure hope it works!

We just built a new high school 2 years ago; the performing arts wing is almost as big & fancy as the jock wing. The theater has sound gear on a level with most of what I used as pro. There are several choirs, as well as marching, concert, symponic, & jazz bands - plus wind & percussion ensembles. A great program.

The middle schools and high schools in my area all have band and choir programs of one type or another as electives.

It is either in the 4th or 5th grade that all elementary students go through a basic music appreciation program where they learn to play the recorder. Other than this two week program I do not believe there is any other regular elementary school music classes.

I'd like to see more mandatory formal music programs in schools as studies have shown it improves math comprehension and performance.
