For those interested these PUP's look mighty nice..... "Recreating the Hagstrom single coil bass pickup used on Hagstrom Coronado IV, Guild Starfire and M-85 basses." Theres some interesting info from Rick Turner heres one quote from the background page: "Ron Wickersham devised a method for testing frequency response of magnetic pickup coils in around 1969, and found that the Hagstrom/Starfire pickups had the widest frequency response of anything he had tested. So Ron was documenting what Jack & Phil's ears had already told them." heres the link http://www.basspickup.com/history1.htm have a Happy, Healthy, Holiday. - Tom |

I have a pair in an early 60s EB3 and they are all that and more. Fred is a great guy to work with and he has definitely done his homework plus extra credit on this one. I am hoping he'll come out with a 6 string version to put on my Modulus Q6! Edwin |

Hi, Edwin thanks for posting... I was thinking about using these in a custom I am having built (no not an Alembic this time) a hollowbody design. And its either these or Dimarzio mini humbuckers. - Tom

Edwin: I've been toying around with building bass using a Warmoth body and an aftermarket Modulus Fender replacement neck (either Q or Genesis style). When I saw Fred's site today, it tempted me to consider the DS pu's for my project (Sort of consolidating the graphite neck project with a long-planned wish to rehab an old Guild Starfire or Jetstar). Maybe those are still two very separate projects, but it peeked my curiosity about how the DS's might sound on a graphite neck bass. Knowing your Modulus, what would you expect the graphite neck to sound like with the DS's compared to your current pu's (Do you have the Barts or EMG's?)? Would you run the DS's through an onboard active preamp (I assume you are set up that way now.)? Bill |
