I got a copy of Steve Parrish's Home before daylight which I read cover to cover on boxing day. At first it was very interesting and gave a fascinating insight into a lifestyle most of us can only dream about. After a while though I found it started to get a bit repetetive with each chapter detailing yet another drug frenzy or sexual encounter where i'm sure so much more could have been said - perhaps the sex and drugs were the only parts steve could really remember ;-)
Another present which has hardly been out of the DVD player is Joni Mitchell's 'Shadows and light' which shows jaco at his best in what surely must be one of the finest lineups ever to hit the stage.
Of course, I'm still eagerly awaiting my main present.
Sandra J was absolutely delighted with her Buckeye Burl wooden box. It now takes pride of place on the mantlepiece where it's a talking point for any visitors.

so what bass related presents did everyone else get?

Shadows and Light is very good! I wish there was a Weather Report video of this quality.

For those of you searching in vane, that's Parish with one "r"; the book is about his experiences working with Garcia and the Dead.

Live in concert sometime in the late 90's in Europe, 3-DVD's, Marcus Miller, Mark King and Tower of Power. And last but not least is Steely Dan's DVD of 2 Against Nature. Not only are they tight, but they make it look effortless.

Funny how Santa like the same music that I do; hummm.

Good health, happiness and prosperity to all my low frequency friends.

I resolve to play more and worry less!

Given the question of Brother Graeme now we all have to gather around the open fire and listen to Brother Dave explaining how his new snow shoes are related to bass-playing?

My dear wife gave me a Jaco DVD also. It's his instructional video. Instructional, yeah right, maybe some of you guys can keep up with him not me.
She also threw in a Korg DTR-1000 tuner and a Furman RP-8L power conditioner.
What a woman!

Brother Paul, if it makes you feel better she didn't get me the Gallien-Krueger stack that was on my list. But I have to say I was blessed big time with this one. BTW did you get the email I sent you? My Outlook was acting like it didn't believe me when I told it your address had changed.

I went to the Mpls. show with that lineup - Joni Mitchell 'Shadows and Light' Tour. WOW!! I kept sneaking down to the front of the stage, and security kept sending me back to my seat. Security wasn't as tight in those days. Truly inspirational concert! Jaco wore a full jumpsuit with matching headband. I sent a note to him backstage, but he never came out or got it.

I stopped into a store I used to work at with a bottle of champaign for my old boss and he gives me a gig bag and a Behringer Bass V-Amp Pro. Now I've got to figure out how it works.

Since I normally play my bass unplugged while I'm watching TV I guess the copy of the extended version of The Return Of The King that my wife gave me is Bass related

I was at my brother's house and we decided to watch Return Of The King. We did not realize how long the extended version was. My sister in law opened it up, but apparently it was not immediately clear just how long a movie we were in for. We thought it was going to be two and a half hours; and then I would get in my car and drive two and a half hours back to my house. It turned out to be a very late evening.

I refuse to accept a "bass related" limitation on this thread. I PROTEST! In furtherance of my rebellion I received the following NON-BASS related, (but very cool) stuff from my wife and kid:

Moody Strap (very soft and supple - yea!);

G.D. "Beyond Decription" 1973-1989 Box Set;
G.D. Anthology Songbook (different from my previous G.D. Anthology songbook);
G.D. "Birth of the Dead" 2 disc CD recorded in 1965 & 1966;
G.D. 2005 calendar (is there a pattern emerging here?);
50 picks with my band's name printed on them;
Alembic hooded sweatshirt;
Alembic coffee mug;
Alembic poster;
A Towelie watch;
Tofurky - tofu "beef" jerky;
a few other things; and,
Senior Management is letting me shop for another guitar next weekend at the World Guitar Show.

Also I got her a drum set which I get to mess with as it's curently sitting in the middle of our living room (I wonder how long until she suggests moving it to the spare bedroom?)

Hope everyone got what they wanted, and have a Happy New Year,

Bill, tgo

Two gifts that can help me out musically.....

A 40 Gig iPod and a TiVO.

I also have an FM transmitter that allows me to play the iPod through any car speakers.

My wife hooked up the TiVO to our home network, so I can play any of the music I have on any of the computers we have in the house through our stereo. That includes all the iPod stuff in iTunes!! So far I only have about 3 gig on the iPod. That's an ungodly number of albums / CDs. 72 artists and counting.

Peace,

James

In Tokyo now, I got a "Crafted in Japan" sunburst fretless '62 (reissue) Fender Jazz Bass! I already put three Telecaster chrome knobs on it and have started learning "Continuum."

I got myself a pretty Mexican Fender Jazz 5-string. Fun to play around with, sounds very nice with a little help from the SF-2 Superfilter and great for a 4-string fundamentalist like me to discover why 5-strings are the standard nowadays...

Tom, the fretboard is Pao Ferro and the picture is a typical example of a 'lucky shot'. And Roger, the action is quite low and comfortable actually, although I must admit the picture doesn't make that very clear...

A bandmate gave me a copy of the Gov't Mule movie. My wife got me a tumbler/polisher. The kids got me a plasma globe. Most importantly, I got to spend time with the people I love and my good Danish friends escaped the Tsunami in Thailand by a few feet and a couple of precious seconds. That, and plenty of Black Toad dark beer for me... :-)

Hey All,

Yes I'm back again!!!! I'm home for the holidays and getting ready to head back out again. My wife and I bought a 20gig iPod for both of us, you can guess who's going to be carrying that around...not me! We really didn't go nuts on each other because we're in the process of buying a new house. I guess that's our present to each other too. The kids made out though as they always do. It's just too cool to see their faces on Christmas morning.
My friend and fellow Alembician, who also posts here under Mrfunkwool got me a cool Alembic coffee mug.
I did buy a laptop too so I can be in touch while I'm out.

Peace,
Dino

I had to post this as I suspect there are many in this club who will appreciate it. One of the presents Santa brought for our 9 year old boy was a TV baseball game by Radica. It hooks up to the TV and a wire runs to a plastic "home plate" that sits in the middle of the living room. Another wire goes to the "ball". One player uses the "ball" to select pitches while the other swings a small bat over the plate at the pitcher throws on the TV screen. For about $40 it's pretty cool.

Anyway, tonight my boy challenges me to a game. I turn it on, select "game play" (as opposed to practice, home run derby, etc.) and the screen appears asking me to pick the stadium in which the game will be played. there are four choices as follows:

1. Radica Dome (Radica is the manufacturer)
2. Terrapin Stadium
3. Minglewood Park
4. Franklin's Field

My boy couldn't figure out why I fell over laughing. We are everywhere!

(For those Dead impaired, the Grateful Dead have songs called "Terrapin Station", "New Minglewood Blues", and "Franklin's Tower").

I just bought a Delphi - MyFi xm sat. radio. My buddy has been calling me everyday with the playlist on the prog channel. NYC area radio is very much less than adequate for me. (ie. sux) That along with Monty Python 14 disc dvd set and a Vampire hunter D "action collectable" should keep me occupied while I wait for my latest Doomtree Excel 5.

I got a rack-mount Line6 Bass Pod Pro

Bought it myself, just above half retail price, so I'm quite happy with it. Only wish they had had a XT model, particularly for the DR103 and DR200 amps + cabs.

Oh well, I'll have to save up and buy my former boss's Hiwatts. He only uses Ashdowns these days.

My wife gave me: Alembic Guitar Polish, Brass Cleaner, and a new set of Alembic strings for my Rogue. In addition, she ordered a custom flight case for the Rogue (pretty surprised!!) My oldest son gave me "Bass Guitar for Dummies" by Patrick Pfeiffer which is great reading material..(something I really wanted).
