Okay, I've been wondering for a long time what everyone in Alembic land is using for their rigs. I have recently evolved mine into the sound I have been searching for years. So here is my setup:

Alembic Epic 4-String w/ Zebrawood
Alembic Excel 5-String w/ Zebrawood
Alembic Excel 5-String w/ Burl Redwood
Fender Geddy Lee Jazz 4-String
Rick Turner Renaissance Walnut 5-String

Shure "The Guitarist Wireless" (sometimes)
|
Korg DT-1 Digital Tuner
|
Sansamp RBI ---> Alembic F-1X Preamp (unaffected)
| |
Behringer Tube Composer (Dual Channel)
| |
Behringer Eurorack 16 Channel Line Mixer
|
ProCo Direct Box
|
QSC RMX2450
|
ACME Low B mk.II 2x10
|
ACME Low B mk.II 4x10

All of this is in a SKB RotoX 12 space rack.

I normally just use the 4x10 cabinet, and only use the 2x10 when in an extremely large venue or outside. Now, I know a bunch of you are wondering why I have the RBI in the mix. Yes, I play Alembics and should be going after the best tone possible, but I love the aggressiveness of Geddy Lee's sound. Most of you know he is the main reason I play bass. Anyways, I stole the idea for my rig after what he has been using lately, except tailoring it to my style and sound.

I use the RBI to generate the top end distortion I like, and then use the Tube Composer to compress the heck out of the signal. I then take the F-1X to beef up the bottom end, and only slightly compress it. What I wind up with is a BIG tone that has the cut and bottom end to fill up the space in my three piece rock trio.

I don't use chorus, delays, or reverbs... but I have been kicking around adding a TC Electronics unit to the mix, using the mixers effects send/return features to control the amount as needed.

My rig now consists of:

- 1991 Alembic EVH 4
- 1999 Alembic Orion 4

with a...

- Glockenklang 'The Passenger'

sometimes with, sometimes without...

- Alembic SF-2 Superfilter

I also have a Fender MIM Jazz V with Rio Grande pickups (great match with the SF-2!) and a heavily customised Guild B-301 fretless to fool around with. My G.A.S.-list contains a Conklin GT Rocco Prestia Signature...

Saturday night I played the Series I through a Bass Pod Pro (in a roto-rack with a power conditioner). Ran the signal into two 40+ year old Bogen 200 watt mono all-tube power amps (individually wrapped in homemade plywood racks because they are so @$!$*&#@ heavy!) and into a couple of Carvin folded horns with 18s inside. It wasn't annoyingly loud in the audible ranges, but you could *feel* every note. The music was 60's through 90's top-40 for the most part. I'm still fighting the Leslie cabinet from Hell and a very loud guitarist, but I can quite literally feel the groove happening even if I can't hear it. If it were a gig that needed a more high-fidelity sound, then I would have used a front-loaded/ported 18 and a 210, with an Ashley crossover, and played around with the crossover frequency to suit the room. And I ran direct out of the Pod to the board as well.

After seeling a lot of my basses and trying even more amps, here's my current setup.

Alembic Series I with SII electronics 1998
Alembic Sesies I 1977
Moon "Larry Graham" Jazz bass 1982
J.K. Lado Standard 1978
All 4 strings.

Glockenklang Heart Rock amp
Alembic SF-2 filter
2x Hevos cabs.

Ebs Octave thing
Ebs Multicomp compressor (just a little bit)

Hey Paul,

Met mij en de mefrauw chaat ut choet. Met U oock?
She's doing a lot of backing stuff for the national songfestival plus she has her own website for vocalists. www.vocalisten.nl which keeps her busy.

Well, because my flightcase has mounting rails (?) in both front and back, I decided to put the power supply in the back because other band members, read drummers, are always too close to the connectors during setup of their set. (By the time they are halfway building, I'm already on my second glass of wine). I always had to take the cable out because I was afraid somebody could damage the connector. Since it is in the back I don't have to worry at all. Plus it saves me another rack space.
I never use guitar stands for the same reason, during a break I put my bass back in its case or right behind my rig.
Did this help?

All 4 string.

Furman PL-8
Korg DT-1 tuner
TC Elec M-1 XL

Hm, around here probably nobody is as cheap as me:

SWR Workingman's 12

... and it doesn't even have a cover. I do have a more than half-decent cable with Neutrik plugs.

Rogue 6 wenge
Rogue 6 fretless cocobolo

Boogie Scout combo (12" cab), sometimes augmented with Boogie 210 wedge

or

Boogie Walkabout head racked with SF-2 and BBE Sonic Maximizer, into Genz Benz Neo 212.

I've owned MUCH larger rigs, but my current setups sound great and provide plenty of volume, even in my way-too-loud blues band.

WOW. Those are some pretty impressive lists. Some checkbooks/senior managements are quite permissive. I wonder how you guys decide which axe to play. With one Alembic in the house it's easy for me to decide.

Well, I said I was cheap, but not as cheap as in "all I have is a SWR Workingman's 12".

The full line-up, a.k.a. "a little short on the drool factor", is:

88 Alembic Spoiler 4/watermark koa, narrow peghead
94 Alembic Epic 4 defretted/flame koa

the looper pedal was made by David Boggs at
www.loooper.com

he can make any custom combo you can think of. Mine is a one loop with tuner mute and blender knob options. It's very nice stuff, all true bypass.

Paul TBO,

How come this is a show-your-rig thread and there's no pictures of Tweak Peaks?

My stack seems to change on a pretty regular basis but it's kind of settled into this:

Custom 6-string fretless Alembic
Homemade 6-string fretless with Alembic hardware and electronics
(There are some other basses, but those are the two that I actually play.)

Alesis Powertrip 8 power distribution and rack light
Shure UT14 UHF wireless system
Eden Navigator
TC Electronic M-ONE effects
Ampeg B2R into 1-18 Carvin for the bottom
Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ into Eden 210XLT 4 ohm for the highs
Not shown is a Peterson strobe tuner model R450

What an impressive collection ! Everything what's good and expensive I see listed here ! Well, following richbas939 suggestion I'll add my 2 Cents here.

Basses (4 String):
- Alembic 94 MK Signature (my main bass)
- Musicman 99 Sterling
- Alembic 97 Epic fretless

For my rig I use 3 different setups:

1) High volume hard rock setup
(I never had this at full volume. At 50% volume my 2 guitarists both using Marshall fullstacks start protesting)
- F-1X Preamp
- QSC RMX-2450 PA
- SWR 8*10" Megoliath

2) In case I have enough PA support and want a dirty rock sound at lower stage volume
- Mesa Boogie Bass 400
- Mesa Boogie 2*10" Diesel cabinet

3) For smaller events, soul and jazz singer support
- Trace Eliott 4*10" Combo

I still got my SF-2 and Lexicon MPX-1 from my big rack but haven't used it for months now. So if somebody likes to make a bargain, ... your offers are welcome.

Mine is very basic...but provides me with a great sound:

1998 5-string Rogue w/custom flight case
AT 1400 UHF Wireless system
Ashdown Mag300 into a Carvin loaded cab (15" & 10" speakers)

Great growl and tight highs

I don't consider all my stuff my 'rig'. A least two basses will never see stage time again; The Ripper and the SD Curlee are keepsakes. Some basses are trade-bait. Some are backups. The current rig is kinda weird. There are some amps and cabs that got relegated to my home studio, Some are just waiting till we get more room. But I'm using:
Essence 5
Orion 4
Conklin GT-5
G&L Tribute L-2500
Spector Q5
Lightwave Classica 5
into
Moog MurF-105>
Ch.1>Morley Dual wah> Trace Elliot AH-500x>Avatar 2x10
Ch.2>Akai Deep Impact>Digitech BP-200>Sunn Coliseum Bass 300>X-Audio 2x10(yeah, its cheap but it thumps!)
If needed I add a Mackie M1400 power amp and add to cabs; An Acme Low B2 and an Eden 2x10 wedge and replace the Sunn with an TE AH-300.
The Basson B15b, the Hartke 4.5xl and the QSC RMX 850 are my studio stuff.

Hi all, I don't have a lot of fancy equipment. I play my Spoiler through a Working Man's 300 and into a working Mans 4x10 cabinet.

Alembic Essence 5 curly maple 1998, Spoiler 4 flame maple 1987 and an early all rosewood Schecter P-Bass. Amp is an Eden WT-550 with a D112xlt or two D210xlt cabs depending on size of venue. Also have a Sovtek Bassov 50 watt head and 1X15 cabinet for that B-15 sound. Pretty simple when you think about it.

I just gotta add my two cents here. I'm an old guy and don't care to haul anymore than necessary. And I'm not a scientist like you young bucks, so I don't have all that fancy processing stuff. Although, from time to time I do toy with the idea of using a crossover. With that in mind here's what I use.

For Church gigs:
2 SWR Workingman's 10 running stereo
(at 35lbs I can carry one in each hand)

For Medium rooms and venues where we use a DI to the board and don't need (or want) a lot of stage volume:
2 Eden Nemesis NC210's running stereo or if it's a small room, I'll run one mono.
(At less than 50lbs they're relatively easy to move and IMO sound as good as my old SWR Redhead did)

For large venues or outdoors I add the following to the NC210s:
2 Vintage (1979) Eden 212 Rhino cabinets
2 Vintage (1979) Eden BR115 cabinets
Powered by QSC RMX1450 running stereo
(the old Eden cabinets are built like tanks and weigh almost as much but they can move a lot of air and make nice visual wall of sound)

Current Basses:
89 Series II 4 string (Thomastik Jazz Flats)
02 Series II 5 string (actually arrives 11 Mar 05 according to the tracking number)
79 BC Rich Eagle Koa 4 string (Thomastik Jazz Flats)
80 BC Rich Eagle Maple 4 string (Rotosound Swing Bass ML)

I still play the Eagles a lot because the Alembic case is a bitch to get in my Corvette. Probably need to invest in a Gig Bag.

Cheers!
