Just a note to let the bay area Alembicians know that Stanley Clark and Billy Cobham will be joining McCoy Tyner in the San Francisco bay area at Yoshi's, starting January 25.

Will do - I am going to be landing Wednesday afternoon and trying to head for Santa Rosa on Thursday, most likely followed by some southern Sonoma wineries. I will have to see what the schedule looks like and may try for the 8 if it looks like we can get there.

Plans are awfully loose at the moment.

Some tips on Yoshi's, especially for Bob or anyone else who hasn't been a regular.

- They usually have two shows per night, 8 and 10. If you go to the 8 and they haven't sold out the 10, you can get in line outside and stay free for the 10 if there's room.

In the old days (former location) this worked almost always, now it's a bit less certain, but on a weeknight your chances are probably at least 50/50. If you ask them on the phone, they tend to be a little optimistic about whether they're going to sell out.

- If you go for the 8:00 show, do it right. Make a dinner reservation, get there about 5:30 to stand in line (doors open at 6), go in to check out the stage setup and stick name tags on your chairs, then have a great dinner and enjoy the show.

Great sushi, and other Japanese food. I particularly recommend the grilled calamari appetizer. Oh, it's a one drink minimum per show, so go easy on the sake during dinner...

- Parking is in the same building, and only a few bucks if you remember to get validated (self-service stamper by the door).

- If it's someone you really want to see, and are willing to pay for both shows, then you get the privilege of reserving seats for boths shows (same or different as you please) - but pick both before the first show.

- It took a while, but they've done a great job of working out the acoustics in the new place. The PA is hung from the ceiling above the front of the stage, so if a vocalist were involved you might prefer to sit halfway back or so (all of 3 or 4 tables), though otherwise I'd go close for more of the direct or acoustic sound. But it will sound good pretty much anywhere, so you might prefer to think about who you want to be able to see well (assuming you get there early enough to check it out).

I'm still thinking about going myself. I agree that these are three greats, but it somehow strikes me as an "odd" trio (won't elaborate unless pressed). I've seen Tyner probably half a dozen times, dating back to the mid-70's in some Boston club, and at times he's been very high on my list of favorites. I think in this case my main reason for going would be to see Stanley, because I have not yet, and I think it's a safe bet he'll be playing mostly (maybe all?) upright in this setting (sorry, Keavin, but this is Tyner's show, not a Stanley jam-fest).

I'll let you know if I'm coming, and if so offer to stand in line for you, in case you're having trouble just getting there in time for the show. And here's another tip: if you're going to start at Alembic, forget the wineries - you're not going to make it :-)

You must be the one true Bob!

Thanks for the advice, that's all great info, and with the lure of even decent sushi, I should have no trouble pulling Lisa out of wine country. Maybe we will try to make the 8:00 show after all. We're taking a UK wine writer to Long Island wine country for the weekend, but I'll see about getting this planned and reserved before it's too late.

I would love to see him play his new bass, but I agree that it's likely to be an upright performance.

Thanks again for the info, it was extremely helpful.

Glad to see that other alembicians are going to be there.

Bob, (TOB) looks like you have about the same schedule that I do. I'm going to be at the factory midmorning on the 27th and I'm going to the 10 PM show.

I was told that the only two shows that had seats available were the 10PM shows Thursday and Friday. Everything else was sold out.

Maybe I'll see you there.

Okay, send me an invoice (that's spelled "b"-"i"- and two "l"s). Sorry about that. Sometimes the smart-aleckiness spills (no pun intended, sort of) out through my mouth or fingers before I can stop it. It's caused trouble before, believe it or not. I need to work on that one of these years.

"Okay, send me an invoice (that's spelled "b"-"i"- and two "l"s)"

Somebody call?

Rory:

Thanks for the heads up! I just made dinner reservations and got tickets to the Friday 10 p.m. show. (The web site said is was sold out, but I called Yoshi's and they still had tickets). What a line up! I'm really looking forward to it. The only one I've seen live is Billy Cobham a few times year's ago with Bobby & the Midnites (one of Bob Weir's side bands - I seem to remember Tim Bogert from Vanilla Fudge on bass - not exactly Stanley Clark). Cobham is a monster. The three together should be very fine. If anyone else is going to the Friday late show, give a shout.

If any of you Bobs or Bills or Richs get to the show tell The band they need to come to Europe pretty soon - edinburgh would be a good start followed by belgium. We really don't get enough of the 'greats' over here.

Hey Bob TOB

I know what you are thinking when you mention the line-up being an odd trio however the only odd one in my opinion is Billy Cobham. Stanley on acoustic can be more exciting than when he is on electric and Billy has tamed it down through the years. I once saw him do an acoustic set and I think he forgot that the other players were not playing electric instruments and I found him to be quite overbearing to the rest of the trio. The last time I saw him he was much more in the pocket and playing as a jazz drummer should and to be honest his bass player actually stole the show. Let me know what your thoughts are, I'm interested to see if we are of the same opinion.

Yeah, you got it - Cobham seemed like the odd man out, to me.

Stanley can certainly do this. On a good day - on upright - he can make my top ten list (electrics rarely make it in there, though I always waver a bit on Jaco, just because he was so unique). But I'd be a little nervous that together, Cobham and Clarke could pull Tyner off-center.

Last time I saw Tyner, Avery Sharpe was on bass (forget who was drumming), and he was great. Mostly upright, but he did a few songs on electric (don't remember what kind), and fit in tastefully.

I haven't really followed Cobham, and I guess the fact that (as far as I know) I only have him on one recording says something about my personal tastes. Spectrum was a decent album, and there are a few tracks on there that I still enjoy, but I've tended to think of him as a power/fusion player, and I seem to favor a more musical approach, ala DeJohnette.

Of course, given that we've recently lost Elvin Jones and Tony Williams (not sure if Williams and Tyner ever played together, though it seems nearly certain), maybe pickings are slim.

If Cobham has "tempered", as you suggest, can you recommend any recordings?

I would definately recommend "Live at the Greek". Stan and Billy even include a great rendition of Stratus. Stan also dispells any doubt whether he is a power upright bass player. Cobham isn't exactly subdued but he plays tastfully.

Well, this event is selling out quickly. We couldn't get the 8PM Thursday show, had to settle for the 10PM. Fri-Sat-Sun show up as sold out, but, as of now, tickets are still available for all Tue/Wed shows and 10PM Thu.

I stand (or sit) corrected - I also have Live at the Greek, and Stratus is good. Maybe when the rest of my hi-fi finally returns (from repairs/upgrades) I'll try actually listening to the drummer...

Too bad about the sell out, Bob. Tyner has been doing an annual two week stint here for years now, so it gets a little extra attention. But if I had to choose, I'd always go for the second set anyway.

Don't necessarily believe the web site. When I checked it the Friday late show was listed as "sold out". I called Yoshi's directly and they still had tickets. So I would try calling them (real human to human real time communication - what a concept!)

Anybody else going to the Friday late show?

When we called, we tried everything short of outright bribery to get tickets to the Thursday 8PM show. We'll be eating dinner at 8 instead. Does any sound from the show leak into the dining area so we can hear a double show even if we can't actually see it?

Since we fly in from the east coast on Wednesday, I was afraid to book that night lest we fall asleep and snore during someone's solo.

Don't think I've ever been in the restaurant during a show, but best guess is you won't know anything is going on. They've got the bar/lobby area stuck in between, and you'd hear a little there, but it pretty well buffers the restaurant, which also has some quiet background music.

Besides, it's worth concentrating on the food. Just ask them when the line will start to form so you get a good choice of seating.

I'll be arriving at 8:45 for dinner and then on to the 10:00 p.m. show. I'll be with a cute blonde, (yea, she's my wife), and will be wearing my Alembic T-shirt. Come up and say "hi".
