So, my local shop has a Laravée D-05-12 that I am madly in love with. As the Lovely & Charming Mrs. Cowboy & I are both currently, um, between situations, this is an unhealthy obession; luckily, e-bay has saved me - a Takemine G335 for $87.50! Not by any means a Laravée, but the friend who taught me my first stuff had one and I liked it, I've been jonesing for a twelve for years, and did I mention $87.50? The listing said it had been converted to 6-string; just needed a nut & 6 bridge pins to put it to rights; when it showed up, that proved untrue - already had the nut!
I have to go prep the garage for painting now; will try to get pics up later if the bottles are banging.

It might not help, but I love my Larrivee. I can't begin to say how pleased I've been with it.

Larrivee's are a very quietly solid guitar that are an excellent alternative if you want to steer clear of the Martin/Gibson/Taylor wars without going to very low volume builder guitars.
Plus, they are Quebec-oise, which has to count for a lot.

On the other hand, 12-strings need to be trucks, and Taks usually fill that bill: They ride around under buses a lot, and take a licking and keep on ticking !

Yeah, Kevin - I love the Laravée at the shop, too; a truly magical instrument. But the Takemine was $1211.50 less. If anyone wants to make up the difference (or give me a job), I'd let the Tak go....... :-)

Peter:

Way to go! I love eBay prizes. In the past few months I picked up a Daion Savage Bass for $153 that had some cosmetic issues (which my wife helped me address with black nail polish), and I just got a beautiful Daion Power Mark XX top-o-the-line bass for only $530. The auction had lousy pics and ended at 6:30 a.m. west coast time. Enjoy your 12er. I love my '77 Series 1 12er.

Thanks, Bill. I have never encountered an Alembic guitar in the flesh (in the wood?), but, extrapolating from the basses, for decades I have imagined that an Alembic 12 would be the only thing to top a Fender Electric XII. If yours is the one I think it is, had I been employed it would have been mine (or cost you more).

No offense to our hosts or Fender, but PRS also makes (or made) an exceptional electric 12-string.

They might be out of production now.

I'm still kicking myself for not having the financial resources required to score one of the few that have crossed my path over the years.

Never played a PRS 12er (never seen one). I had a Ricky 360 12, but the neck was just too narrow. Couldn't play clean arpeggios. Then I had a Fender Strat XII with Alembic pickups that was quite nice, but I put the original pickups back in and traded it once I picked up the Alembic. Based on the PRS's I've owned, I'll bet their 12 is sweet.

PRS has just never spoken to me. Pretty? Sure thing. Well built? From all indications. My guitar? Not even close. Couldn't explain it; they just don't work for me. Rics don't fit my hand, and I hate finished fretboards (the great Ed Reynolds, formerly of Soundsmiths in Chicago, now Ed Reynolds Guitars in Austin, used to have "definishing Ric fretboard" on his regular menu of services).
The Strat XII seems interesting, but I haven't come across one; could you compare it to the Electric XII for me?

Sorry Peter, I've never played or even seen an Electric XII in person. I did really like the MIJ Strat XII though, especially with the Alembic pickups installed.

If you get a chance, check one out; they're superb. They're going about $3500-4000 these dyas, but back when they went for $1500, a friend of mine got one for $150. It's everything a Ric ain't.

I would have loved to have this one,
link
I have the bass/guitar doubleneck version and they sound and feel so nice . A 12 string would have been the perfect compliment (and 6 or so lbs. less ).
Lack of individual saddles and deep pockets convinced me I should just build one from scratch .
It'll be less the cool aria buckers, but maybe I'll find some super 77's or hmmm....maybe some activators : ) .

Cool! If I'd seen it, it would have at least gone for a higher price. I had just checked eBay too, but I searched for "Rev Sound".
