I'll be bringing the family to the NYC area for a June 25th celebration of my mom's 80th. Since we'll be in for a few days, I was wondering if anyone in the area is interested in getting togeher for an Alembic meet & greet, like the recent one in SLC. I think there is a good chance my Further will be in my hands by then. (Mica, Susan, Val, Alembic Elves?) Any interest out there?

Count me in. Maybe if KFS is interested too, we can carpool :-). Imagine that -- eco-friendly Alembic players! Who could've imagined?

If this is to happen, someone in the area has to take the ball and run with it. I'd offer my place to hold it, but I think the drive to Oakland would put most NYers off. Any volunteers? (Jeff - does the Dire Wolf want a piece of the action?)

what day first? fri sat sun?
how many hours?
look at ultrasound studios in manhattan
my drummer might be willin to join us and he knows a fair amt of dead tunes, but man does not live by dead alone and i would like to play other stuff. anyone know a keyboard player?

have been researching this as i am treating my buddies The Trip 3s to a studio visit in honor of the birth of the wolf

will be happy to put it together... of course we needs to work out the $$$. one thing at ultrasound. no smoke in the studio; gots to hit the stairs.,.. and chinatown after?
http://www.ultrasoundrehearsal.com/price.htm

figure depending on the room size 25--35hr
it varies

I'd be willing to take the trip down to the City whenever this takes place. Ultrasoud Studios seems like a great place to house this function.

As for my scheduling, afternoons are probably preferable, 1st choice would be Sunday (26th), 2nd choice would be Saturday (25th), though I could probably do Friday or Monday afternoon if others are available. I'll most likely be doing family and friends stuff in the evenings (my mom's 80th dinner will be Sat. night - I'm probably going to try to get tix to the Yankes/Mets for Friday night or Sunday night). I'd cetainly chip in for some studio time and I think I can suffer through a mandatory stroll to the stairs. Does the place have guitar amps for rent too? Schlepping my Alembic is one thing, bringing the Boogie is another matter entirely (as in 'it ain't gonna happen')!

I'd be willing to chip in for the studio and I can bring along a decent bass rig (though that doesn't help you too much, Bill!). Sunday would be good for me, and Saturday would be my #2 choice.

What about those little sandwiches ... you know ... where the meat is too big to go on those little pieces of bread and everything breaks.

Since someone has to grab the bull by the horns, let me suggest Sunday, June 26th, sometime in the afternoon. Ayes? Nays? Let's pick the date and time first, get a head count, and then take up Jeff on his offer to set it up. As for the size of the room, my vote is the bigger and more comfortable, the better.

Jeff: can you give us an estimate of the total $ involved and payment preferences (you want something up front? Lay it out and get reimbursed that day? Will you take a personal check or should I ask Dave to hold my cashier's check in escrow until the studio is approved - hey, wait a minute, the guy who brings the extra pizzas to the front door of my rehearsal studio on Thursday nights just told me there are bad vibes about this. Maybe I shouldn't go to Manhattan at all. Maybe I'll wait for another island to visit when the vibes feel better. Just kidding, nyuk nyuk).

When I started to do this idea of "Alembic chapter" meetings a couple of years ago -well "I" is very relative I am sure other people have throw this idea up long before that- I thought it would be best to have 1 decent drummer (they are rare but ...well ...sometimes you can catch one in the wild that doesn't live half the time in his underwear) and a guitarplayer and/or keyboardplayer. I would have invited two or three friends that are "multipurpose" because I can undestand that the fabulous Steve-Vai-style-player is not happy to play Charly Bird tunes, though BOTH styles are fun and nice to play bass with.
Just some thougts from this side of the pond.

One of my bandmembers uses that weird alembic instrument with six high-pitched strings on it?! He said he might be up for the trip.

I'm da one dat came up wid dis idear an I'm a guita playa. So no discrimination, da all ya fat string wizegize out dere unnerstan?

So, letz start nailin dis ting down. Howzabout Sunday, June 26th, 2-6, and den maybe dinna? Whose in? Any counta-proposals? Speak now or fegitaboudit an keep your trap shut.

Ed, et al,
Alembic - great, 6 strings - that's okay, high pitched - I don't know. Maybe you should keep a close eye on the guy.
Rich
P.S. To all you geetar players, we're really not lo freq bigots. We just like to smart off to you guys.
Edit: Typing/posting at the same time. Maybe I should refresh before I post. Dat gize vishus.
Also, do you really think this bass makes my strings look fat?

Ed - that would be a very short scale 6 string piccolo bass.

As opposed to the bulk of Alembic's output: Guitars for Andre the Giant & Shaquille O'Neal that are factory seconds because they forgot two of the strings. (nyuk, nyuk).

Wow, I almost missed this thread!
{slaps forehead}
June 26 is four days after my birthday and three after my one-year anniversary with my Series, not to mention my day off and a fun way to beg off of church, so pending wifely permission I'm in.
Money's tight, but I should be able to scrape together a few bucks toward studio rental and gas for anyone willing to pick me up in Troy.
E-mail's in my profile.
Hoo-rah!
PS--just caught the Funk Brothers in Albany today. Oh my Gawd...

KFS - I've stayed out of this thread because that's not a particularly good weekend for me, although it's not out of the question. But if I find a way to do it I'd be glad to give you a ride.

Also, I live in NH but I grew up in Ballston Lake, about 10 miles north of Troy. My brothers and I get together there at my mother's house a few times a year to jam. A few days of jamming outdoors and fireworks are coming up 4th of July weekend. So, whether you make it to the Big Apple or not, if you're interested in some informal jamming/partying the following weekend let me know. It would be awesome to meet another club member, especially if you can bring a drummer ;-)

For some reason, I've never been to Ballston Lake...I might be up for a family-style gathering, depending on what the rest of the family is doing that weekend. I'll let you know; thanks for the invite and/or the ride.
Sad to say I don't know any good, local drummers at the moment. I'm enduring a period of musical dormancy.

KFS, it must be something local. Me and a guitar player friend of mine went through about a dozen terrible drummers before he got frustrated and moved out west. Now it's all bass solos, all the time!

So let's see if we can keep the ball rolling here...anyone wanna volunteer to get pricing info for a decent-size room at Ultrasound? Once we get the pricing, we should get some kind of 'head count' to see how the costs will break down.

Volunteers? Thoughts? Comments? Bueller?

Don't count on me, Adam...I'm musically dormant right now, and in contact with no one save you lads and a few others not including drummers.
Wanna grill burgers on the Foreman grill and save this thread from total obscurity? I've never played a Distillate and it's really boring here...
I have Adobo. Please write.
