At the age of 56(arghh) I am in two bands so I am rehearsing some songs I have never played at all, over halfway to gaining blackbelt in Wado Ryu karate as I train 3 to four times a week(double double graded in 10 months..due to previous background in TaeKwon Do), helping a friend restore an old Ford Cortina 1600E and soon going to redecorate my humble abode!
Should I slow down? or as everyone says..'It' keeps you young'

Only if you want to. I'm involved with tons of stuff too (I'm 49) and sometimes want to quit something. The biggest frustration is when it affects play time - i.e. mountain biking. Enjoy life! Stay busy. But, every once in a while, sleep late and do nothing.

To hell with slowing down. I'm 58, and old enough to know I'll hit the occasional speed bump. Of course, once I'm sure I've still got a muffler and didn't pierce the oil pan, back on the gas if at all possible. I figure one day I'll get slowed down by something, so no point in surrendering early !

I will admit it's very important to me at this age (I HATE that phrase) to enjoy things as much as possible, and my tolerance for tedium is way shorter. But then, I've learned myself better after all these years, and it's easier to know my happy zone much more easily. I'm not so interested in keeping myself young (been there, done that, was a very bumpy ride) as in keeping myself happy at this time in my life, which fortunately doesn't take much.

I also favor sleeping late and doing nothing. Some mornings, it's a treat to sit around in my sweats with no shave and my hair sticking up, watching 'The Searchers' or 'Metropolis' with a fresh pot of coffee. Not bad work if you can get it !

WOW - TWO TENNESSEE MESSAGES in a row

Just got back from an awesome MTB ride followed by playing the Anderson. I'll be thumping the Alembic after supper.

DO NOT SLOW DOWN - just get more selective :-)

Stephen

Yes, you should trade your sports car for a SUV and take up the lap harp and wear loud plaid golf clothes everywhere and endorse Obamacare and wait till Medicare kicks in, and whatever you do, don't write or perform music in public! And don't even look at convertibles or cute girls!

That leaves the field a little more open for guys like me to still be able to do that stuff (insert dumb smiley face emoticon here).

gtrguy..I don't have sports car..I have something more dangerous..Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade which I do take it to the limit sometimes.
As far as the clothes go..over here in the UK it is Marks & Spencer beige slacks, white checked shirt(usually blue stripes separating the checks), hush puppy shoes and a 'windcheater' jacket BUT not for me...Superdry jeans & tees, Vans shoes as well as Doc Martins. As far as the harp goes..I will keep the four string electric one with the LED's in the neck.. Rock 'n'roll!!

I have a smart car with a 600cc engine, i'd love to do the mod and have a hayabusa engine installed like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE4kqBT8dWo
Although that wouldn't be classed as slowing down.... :-)

Don't slow down! seriously, will you actually mumble 'I wish I played less music...' on your deathbed?! of course you won't, or wish you'd done less mountain biking(unless you die in a crash...oh well...) so NO don't slow down, you're supposed to live life this well...the crazy thing is that many young people today will realize that their whole lives were experienced through a screen, often willingly (recording a show with their cameraphone, rather than watching..) It's sad, because the change was so fast...western cargo cult I guess...Tony

For what it might be worth to some reading this thread ...

I've slowed down; a lot.

Back in the 90's I was always in a hurry; I worked long hours, I drove fast so that I wouldn't waste time in the car, I ate out for convenience, etc. And I was often frustrated, annoyed, inconvenienced, irritated, agitated, angry, disappointed, dissatisfied, etc, etc.

Now, I drive slower, I walk slower. When I'm hiking, I take my time and enjoy the wildflowers, plants, trees, sun, sky. When I go to town, I take the backroads, avoid the race on the interstate. I cook. My days are peaceful and joyful. I am content and happy. I am not in a hurry to do anything. Sitting here by the window, looking out at the far ridge bathed in sunlight, white clouds in a blue sky, there isn't anywhere else I want to be right now.

I mention this because often we are in a hurry because we want to be somewhere other than where we are now. But you can't actually be anywhere other than where you are now. Realizing this can be an opening to finding peace, for those who find themselves from time to time somewhat ill at ease.

So I suppose an answer to the question might be that if you are at peace, if you are happy and content, if you find joy in your day, then perhaps there is no need to slow down or speed up. Where you are right now is the only place you need to be.

I couldn't agree with Dave more. Take your time, be where you are, do what you want. I am still learning this, but the trip is a gas. No pressure.

Dave, good analysis...I think Terry is doing well; he's got various projects to keep him busy and entertained; the biggest problem overall is stagnation or not not thinking; that's where dementia grows...but of course that's well in the future so play hard!!!

dave...yep I totally get your meaning there..but my interpretation was that I don't want to go down the road of sitting around in the house or in the bar, there are some guys who I see spend every night in the pub drinking way too much alcohol. I just don't want to end up a couch potatoe!
