Hi,

I'm looking for recommendations for a good gig bag.

It needs to be able to stand up to a lot of use.

For a long scale, standard bodied, Series II.

If possible something available in Europe - or even better Ireland.

Any thoughts (apart from a hard case would be better - I know that but it's not practical here)?

Thanks,
Rob.

Hi Rob, I can personally recommend these Harvest leather gig bags. They are a company based in Germany and I have bought two of them. First one for holding two basses

This one for a single bass which is the one I use most of the time.

I've use them regularly for gigs and rehearsals and they are great strong and sturdy.

Levy's makes an excellent leather gig bag for Bass, as well as guitar. They retail for around $350 US. Plenty of padding and pockets

Ditto on the Levy's bag. Those things are built like tanks.

I just picked up a Mono M80 bag and it is very impressive. Not sure of availability in Europe, though...

I've been considering the Mono M80 myself - I realized that my angled-headstock instruments aren't really safe without neck support.

I share Bell Helmet's philosophy when it comes to protecting my Alembic -

+1 on the Mono gig bag. I own the single and the double ones -the single for my Epic, the double whenever I have to carry the Epic AND another bass, my Epic only travels either on those Mono cases, or in an ATA style, heavy-and-sturdy flight case-, and they work great!.

I always prefer a hard case, with wheels as I age. Sometimes a gig bag is easier, and/or more convenient or practical to carry i.e. Cabs, trains etc.

The Harvest bag is a good one. I have one for my Modulus, but even better is the Glenn Cronkhite bag. It's a step up from any other gig bag I've seen. My Starfire loves it.

I'd love a gig bag for my MK but I can guarantee the two points on the omega would be snapped the first time I used it. hardcase all the way for me.

Try Hiscox Cases UK - I had to have mine adapted for my Orion (internally) but they are tough but hard cases. I have to agree with the only case is a hard case - sounds as if they are a bit violent and threatening but you know what I mean! Glynn

I assumed my europa wouldn't fit a standard hiscox case so I contacted them to get a hard case made for my bass but was told they don't do custom cases. How did you get yours adapted.

They took the standard Hiscox case that I got with the bass in 2000 (it has Bass Centre on it) and altered the foam inside. I went over to Cannock and found them really nice people. Glynn

Thanks for all the suggestions!

The gig bag isn't for me - I'm not gigging at the moment so don't need a case. It's for a friend who is constantly playing around Dublin and doesn't drive so a gig bag is essential.

At the moment it looks like he'll be going for a leather Harvest bag, they look great.
