Hello Friends ,

I'm trying to set up a list of the 20 most popular rock songs ever...songs that you snap after 2 or 3 chords ...This could be a great set list for cover bands . So , as someone needs to start , i go first ( 5 songs per entry ) :

1) smoke on the water : deep purple
2) you really got me : the kinks
3) hells bells : ac/dc
4) crosstown traffic : jimmy Hendr.
5) jumping jack flash : rolling stones

So , after 10 entry ( of 5 songs ) , a first point will be made with the songs that have been most voted for !

On your marks , ready : go !

Hi - there used to be a notice threatening a £5 fine at a music shop by me if you played smoke on the water. You really got me is definately a popular classic,as are numbers 4 and 5.I've never heard of hells bells. What about Hey Joe by Hendrix and Knocking on heavens door aways seems to be popular (The guns and roses version ).

Hi Alain,

Very cool thread idea! It's hard for me to choose only 5, but here goes:

1)Layla - Derek & the Dominos
2)Gimme Some Lovin' - Spencer Davis Group
3)Frankenstein - Edgar Winter Group
4)Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
5)Reelin' in the Years - Steely Dan

I hope the Dan qualifies as 'Rock.' I was very tempted to put Smoke on the Water on my list too, but it didn't quite make the cut :-).

For popular how about:
1) Whippin Post - Allman Bros. Band
2) Walk This Way - Aerosmith
3) Pump It Up - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4) China Grove - The Doobie Bros.
5) Burning Down the House - Talking Heads

Not so popular:
1)Teaser - Tommy Bolin
2) Hold On - Crack the Sky
3) Spanish Moon - Little Feet
4) Ships in the Night - Bebop Deluxe
5) I'm the Man - Joe Jackson

Special Mention:
1) Road Expense - The Dixie Dregs
2) Breathe/Time - Pink Floyd

There are numerous newer bands I would consider for a cover band but you stated "most popular ever" which implies a certain amount of aging.

Hello Charles (1 ) , charles ( 2 ) and keith ,

Thank's for your participation . I take note of every suggestion and the final results will be posted the 5 th of july at...my birthday !!!!!!!

Btw , in " most popular ever " , you can also put songs or bands not that old that you find really terrific ( ex: u2, the clash ( a bit old indeed ) , police , nirvana...for example ) .

Thank's friends !

Alain,
I hate to break it to you but your examples are a bit long in the tooth. :-)
When I was thinking of newer rock groups it was the likes of, Nickel Back, Incubus, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Saliva, etc... All have good songs in my mind but they have'nt met the test of time to see if they hold up.

Keith - if the test is songs frequently played by teenagers in guitar shops, the most recent entrant that I am aware of is Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Here are a few in no particular order.

- Louie Louie - Lots of great versions of this Richard Berry song: Kingsmen, Kinks, Grateful Dead . . .
- Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry (many great versions)
- All Allong the Watchtower - Bob Dylan, Jimi (many great versions)
- Satisfaction - Rolling Stones (others)
- Revolution - Beatles (others)

Too many great songs and too many of my own personal favorites - I'd wouldn't stop typing for days.

BTW - I think it's natural to have older songs come to mind - they have stood the test of time and still hold up - it's part of what makes them great.

Sam, You hit the nail on the head, and I thought I was the only Bubble puppy fan around here, my band back in the 70s use to play Hot smoke and sassafras and it's still on the top of my list of fun songs to play!!!!!!!!

how do you think I got the name "The Loud One"

I think I may have converted our moder Dave. I snuck it into some Edgar Meyer files emailed to him some months back. Usually when I mention Bubble Puppy all I get back are blank stares.

I always though The Loud One came from that million watt Little Manhattan rig of yours!

Here in Houston, Bubble Puppy was a mainstay at Love Street Light Circus in the old Market Square area in the downtown warehouse district. This was a club with strobe lights and light shows and the usual 60's ambiance. If you liked the record, Hot Smoke and Sassafras seeing them live was a total trip. These guys were tighter that just about any band, with the possible exception of the Allman Bros. THEY ROCKED

Sam; I just played that MP3 again, it is a really neat tune. Thanks again. I also just went to the website and read the The Tale of The Puppy, an entertaining little story.
