Hey Jazzy!! Me too!! I bought that album (LP!!) on a used LPs sale when I was a little kid -about 10, already immersing myself into jazz-, and knew nothing about the band, but loved the LP cover! (and it was being sold very cheap). Then I listened to it and immediately loved "Keep that same old feeling" and "Feeling Funky". That was not only my first conscious exposition to Sample and the Crusaderīs work -later came "Street Life" and blew me off!!!- but also my first conscious exposition to Larry Carltonīs guitar playing. (Please note my "conscious exposition" concept implies that I might have -and surely had- heard them before, but not knowing who they were back then). Sample was not only a wonderful player, but one of an exquisite taste. Up he goes, to my keyboard players altar, right beside one of my other all-time favourites: Richard Tee. |

It was 'Street Life' that introduced me to The Crusaders after seeing the movie 'Sharkey's Machine', it was the song at the beginning of the film( itself a great movie). Great jazz/funk band...will be missed by many |

I saw him in recent years when he did a tour over here with Randy Crawford. I think Steve Gadd was on drums and Joe's son on double bass. In fact tomorrow on my Jazz radio programme 18:00 to 20:00 GMT, I will be doing a feature on Joe Sample so feel free to tune in on-line from here. http://tunein.com/radio/New-Style-Radio-987-s37350/ Jazzyvee |
