I currently read Guitar Aficionado, Premier Guitar, Vintage Guitar, Bass Player, Guitar Player and Guitar World.

I'm going to have a little more free time than usual over the holidays (due to several days of "use it or lose it" vacation time) and I'm looking to expand this list so I'm curious about what everyone else likes to read.

I have Bass Gear magazine app on my iphone it's free.
It kills the boredom during waiting times at the doctors office or any other waiting room.

I read the Alembic club forum. They have a lot of really knowledgeable and experienced writers. They recently had a panel discussion on pedals which I found quite interesting.

The only other thing I'm reading of a musical nature at the moment is Levon Helm's autobiography. He was pretty knowledgeable and experienced too.

I did download the score for Beethoven's 5th piano concerto so I could learn the intro to the 2nd movement. I guess that counts as reading something related to music as well.

Tape Op is a great mag. I let my subscription run out but really should renew.

Also read Mix. I used to work for Electronic Musician and Mix so I get a free subscription.

I stopped reading mags like Guitar and Bass Player a long time ago. Enjoyed reading them but found myself running out too often to buy things I didn't really need.

Bass player until a few years ago, seems that there new format didn't fulfill me enough.

The only publication I get these days, that I can't wait to bury my nose in, is The Sun. It has writing that inspires and touches the heart.

I've sworn them all off. I got worn out to reading about either vintage Fenders or how I had to be a Bass Olympian (you know that sport where you simply must learn to slap 90mph on a 7-string bass) or some new 'boutique' bass that's the latest and greatest (even though it's packing the same EMG's and hardware package as a Schecter down at GC), or one more kid in a hot band deep in the depths of that 'sex, drugs, and rock+roll' ruin-your-life-spiral. Enough . . . . .

They just got tired to me. I truly understand that print is a tougher and tougher business, but they're way too in bed with their advertisers, though I can understand why.

Maybe they just don't ask the question I'd have asked. And then, too, at this age, I have other interests, I don't sleep with that damn bass anymore.

Joey... I admire your posts truly!! Same here, how much more can be written about old Fenders/Gibsons, amps with more controls than the Space Shuttle and guys who fret burn faster the the guy who appeared in last month's issue
Keep 'em coming!

Terry, if you're admiring my vents, brother you may want to consult a professional . . . .

Really, I'm telling you, for me all those 'Base Played' magazines made me feel like Waters' emotions that led him to write 'The Wall'. It's amazing to me that for all the implied sense of freedom and 'doing your own thing' that rock implied, you can quickly and easily be segregated and relegated if you DON'T show up at the gig with a PBass and an SVT. 'You don't have a Fender' began to be the same in my mind as 'Vair are your papers?'.

And then lacking this 'de rigeur' equipment and then not wanting to get high/drunk and chase skirts so I could be 'one of the boys' ? So lemme get this straight, I have to be just like everyone else so we can all be hip and cool and different, while I forget what I truly know, and kick my sobriety and relationships to the curb?

I was doomed from the start.

Obviously, I didn't want it bad enough, and from what I've seen, 'bad enough' in a lot of cases was worse than what I thought. Oh to be as successful as Elvis or Michael or Whitney. Or Jaco or Hendrix.

For a lot of my life, I did sleep with my bass, figuratively speaking. It consumed me, kept me up at nights, was all I thought about.

In a way, I was fortunate. I was an eye witness to a lot of bad object lessons, and came out the other end untouched, at least by those usual 'occupational hazards'. Disappointed, yes (as if you couldn't tell !), but lucky and smarter for it. I was never in the right place at the right time and met better people, but hey, it happens to a lot of guys.

So aside from a raging cynicism (whose swelling is gradually receding over time), at this point in my life, there are other things that interest me, and the 'music mags' were a real enabler in buying into that daydream that I now find doesn't have the hold over me that it once did.

EXCUSE me for this hijack !

I bought bass player for the first time in years this month - the Charlie Haden tribute (we're a bit behind int he UK) and was pretty disappointed with the amount of editorial. seemed to be mostly adverts. The few gear reviews were pretty lacklustre too - almost seemed to be written from a template and also very short. None of them left me wanting to try anything out.
Also, without wishing to start a fight with Glynn, the UK's own Bass Guitar magazine leaves a lot to be desired. Every piece of kit gets at least 4/5 star reviews - it's almost as if the reviewer is scared the mag will lose sponsorship if the truth is told. I actually had a subscription to Bass Guitar fora few years but stopped it when I was no longer able to see anything different or exciting from one month to the next. I think as I've got older and more comfortable playing my own instruments I've lost interest in whatever anyone else is doing (with a few notable exceptions). Nowadays, I subscribe to a couple of onuine forums but really only contribute (if it can be called that) to this one.

I´m with Graeme and Dave Houck on this one. After reading Guitar Player, Guitar World, Bass Player, Guitar One, Musician, Keyboard, and some other defunct ones (GFTPM anyone?), it is now to me more a matter of building community with like-minded musicians, than reading the latest hype which might -or not- be up to my expectations. Not into acquiring the newest -be it gear or knowledge-, but what I´ve always wanted -maybe that´s why almost all my gear is at least 15 years old-, and having priorities in musicianship and sound first and foremost. This forum is probably one of the best resources -technical and human- all around.

And here I thought Fender was the best from reading all those experts in the Magazines. ;)
From the Studio environment I would read Mix, Pro Sound News and some of the nich Mags ex: Post. But gave up on the instrument one long time ago.
Very Thankful on this Thanksgiving to this board and Alembic for their amazing instruments.
Peace,
Pete
