For those who care, fresh from the Jerry Garcia Estate is a new DVD offering of the JGB live at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mtn. View, CA on 9/1/90. In addition, they're offering what they call "The Jerry Garcia Collection: Vol. 1 - Legion Of Mary". It's 2-CD live collection from 1974 of various Jerry with the LOM performances from places like the Keystone-Berkeley, The Great American Music Hall (SF), etc. You also get a bonus disc of more LOM performances from the same year from Jerry's store. No problem...I'm a sucker for those pre-orders, LOL! Because of this DVD, I dropped a load at both the Jerry Garcia (estate) store and the Grateful Dead Store (really, one in the same...I think the shared warehouse is in VA). There are also some new JGB cd's (the latest "Pure Jerry" releases) at the store that I somehow missed. I think Jerry's folks dropped me from the email list, despite my past record of impulse buying, LOL! Both those stores have some AWESOME shirts and other things to dump tons of money on that you can't find elsewhere. It is truly the haven of the "Baby Boom" and/or yuppie Dead Head with disposable income (the former of which I am), LOL! | ||

I can't believe you're complaining about $3 a gallon. We're paying around $1.50 a litre in the UK (94.9 pence to be exact and I live about 10 miles from a refinery) - even more reason to stay home - beer and wine are cheaper;-). Graeme | ||

Right, plus I doubt many Europeans drive a $50k 4ton 16ft long Cummins diesel-powered pick-up truck that gets 17MPG, if you're lucky. It's currently $100 to fill-up...and I need to at least once a week for work, more so if I have personal usage. When I bought the d*mn thing a little over a year ago, #2 Diesel was $1.41 (it stayed that way for more than 6mos!), now it's more than double with no end in sight. My raise this year was 2.8%!!! While I still have a job, that's little consolation to a middle-class civil-servant majority taxpayer (40% rate!) in an economy dependent on low fuel prices. GM, Ford, and DC are struggling to give away the large, fuel inefficient vehicles that are their lifeline. The ridiculous rise in fuel costs will, in turn, affect the price of everything. H*ll, I would never have saddled myself with 48mos. worth of payments had I known fuel cost was going to double or triple. The big three stay in business, and only sell large vehicles, because of the cheap (relative to the world) US fuel prices. Now that's in the toilet as well. I don't mean to be rude, but can you really say that rising fuel prices are a shock? We've known for a long time that fuel sources are finite and this whole thing of everyone driving SUVs and other guzzlers just seems like mass suicide to me. With oil companies running the country, I can't really expect any generosity towards the general population as far as fuel goes. We are paying record prices and they are making record profits. This is fine with them and their pals in government. I can't imagine why the average bassist would need more than a Subaru! :-) I'm glad you've gotten a raise, but for those of us out there playing bass for a living, $100 a night has stayed pretty stable for the last number of years while costs of everything has gone up. As time goes on, gigs are drying up and things are still getting more expensive (health care anyone? Jeez!). I know this is way off topic, but economic survival for musicians seems pretty important. On the other hand, the new Truckin' Up To Buffalo DVD was a good distraction on my last tour as we watched diesel prices go well over $3 a gallon. Edwin | ||

LOL! Like mark says, the max speed limit over here is 70mph although on the motorways, (interstates to you) the police tolerate 80. And Keith, the biggest bugbear for the green party these days is the number of people doing the school run in £50k range rovers and jeep cherokees ;-( As the 'prime mover' in my band I drive a landrover discovery that averages 28mpg but fits my two trace cabs, all the PA and my two Alembics (plus mrs j on the odd occasion). I've been listening to the truckin cd the last few days, guess I'll need to get the dvd soon. At least the GDSTORE has it in region free. BTW Mark, any sign of your guitar yet? Graeme | ||

Graeme, You get much better mileage than here in the States. The Discovery is rated at 12mpg city and 16mpg highway in this country. To be honest not much different than the 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass muscle car I owned in high school. Our state legislature have just increased my beer costs and it doesn't involve gasoline or taxes. :-) They lifted the maximum percentage of alcohal for beers and ales from 6% to 15%. This means I can finally obtain Belgian Ales and other high quality brews (at the higher price of course). Mark, I have started to consider a diesel. I have seen companies that sell kits to convert them to use vegetable oil. They include the filters that allow you to utilize used oil from restuarants (which is usually free in this country). The only drawback I have heard of is the exhaust smells like French Fries (or Chips in your case) :-) Keith | ||

Keith: Rudolf Diesel designed his engine to run on vegetable oils, probably hempseed. The oil industry produced petrochemical diesel subsequently. Henry Ford wanted to run his cars on methanol produced from hemp. Unfortunately, the 1937 "Marihuana Tax Act" nipped that in the bud (pun intended!). Ok, in the interest of derailing a politcal debate in which I personally have strong Anti-Bush sentiments and in the interest of keeping the peace here on the club site, I'll get back to the original purpose of this thread: The JGB DVD! Jerry and Co. are in fine form. They did a nice job on the vid, what with interviews of the survivng members (i.e., sans Messrs. Kahn and Garcia), plus little featurettes about the origins of EVERY song on the disc! Nice touch, as some of the chestnuts Jerry covered go back to the early part of the 20th Century. Pic and sound quality are good. It pains me to see Jerry so old and bloated, but that was the reality and it's plain to see as documented here. Fortunately, his performance here trenscends his physical being (as was usual) and he and his band deliver the goods. Standout tracks in my mind: "Don't let go" has a particularly good extended GD-style jam with great interplay between Melvin Seals (new at the time on keys) and Jerry. "I will be released", the old Band/Dylan chestnut (from the Band's debut "Songs From The Big Pink")...I think I like Jerry's soulful howling better than the Band's falsetto....and I've always loved that song. "Dear Prudence". I've always loved that Beatles classic from the "White Album", and Jerry's version particularly spoke to me having first heard it live at the old Capitol Theatre (Passaic, NJ) ca. early '80. I understand Jerry rarely performed this ditty, but when he did, it was awesome! "Stop that Train", the old Peter Tosh classic from his Wailers days. Any time Jerry covers a Wailers tune by Marley, Tosh or whomever, it's always cool! Less than reggae and more like Dead is all I have to say, LOL! Regardless, this one is highly recommended. Buy it from another vendor instead of Jerry's or the Dead's site if you don't feel like subsidising their respective estate's bank account too much, LOL! BTW, for those that don't know, this particular performance was made all the more poignant by the fact that this was originally a Dead show date that was cancelled. The reason: the apparent drug overdose death of Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland (at 37yrs. old) just a couple of months prior. Jerry and his band stepped-in to honor the tickets and put on a memorable show! | ||

No problem, Dave. It's all good. With no disrespect intended to Mica and any of the other awesome mebers of the Alembic family, the addition of yourself as site moderator has only served to improve things here, IMHO. Even though I paid full boat at Jerry's site, it was still worth it. As one of the site's resident cheapskates/bargian hunters, It pains me to pay full boat (+ S&H!) for anything, but I'm a sucker for keeping the Dead's family in beer and skittles, LOL!
