No Jerry, no Grateful Dead. Except for the anniversary angle nothing different than other post-Jerry tours billed as "The Dead" except the ticket price and size of venue.

I am sure that those who choose to attend will have a good time and the band and promoter will clean up. Nothing wrong with that but also hard to get particularly excited about.

I'm assuming Soldier Field because that was the scene of the last shows in '95. Saw them there in '91, and that experience (along with Vince) made it my last show. But as to Chicago itself, my dear Mr. Panzer, we're 'heads here, too* - would love to see them at the Uptown Theater one more time. But with Anastasio? Not even there. I'm afraid I may have to give this one a pass; if they had Jimmy Herring with them, maybe - but not Trey - or Soldier Field, a truly horrible venue.

*But I do take your point.........

Cant resist posting this blotter art to rehash the sentiments on all the other forums:

Beyond that, I question Chimenti's vocal chops for Samba In the Rain and Way To Go.... :-)

Not the Grateful Dead…But Trey is a solid player and a big Jerry fan and will do the music justice.

Soldier field though? No thanks...

Mike:

ROTFLMAO!!!

I spit up my orange juice!

Thanks.

Bill, tgo

P.S.

I have nothing against Chi-town, The Windy City, Hog Butcher for the World. But the appropriate venue for a "last gig" would be home - the Bay Area, where it all started.

That cracks me up every time I see it too, Bill. :-)

The collective consciousness has been pushing for a mini tour w/ different guitarists at each venue.... I doubt it would happen, but it would be nice if they did a couple of nights at Oakland and MSG beforehand.... boot Billy Joel from his residency, and show him how it's done....

I gotta side with Hawkeye on this one (loved that M.A.S.H. episode). The Billboard article clearly lays out the rationale, but it does seem more appropriate to finish things where they started…not where they ended. I guess, though, being in Chicago will make it easier for people from both coasts to attend.

I've heard through the rumor mill that there will be some other shows. I can't imagine them not playing SF. Of course, Red Rocks makes sense, too. Especially with a week of shows!

Obviously, a free show in Asheville would make the most sense.

At my house.

Awesome! I love that movie, So good...Germans do good war movies: Das Boot for example, and see it with subtitles, not dubbed; great movie...anyway, that had nothing to do with the shows so back to where you were, Tony

German was my first language. __________From my perspective ; the first problem with that video for me is that the actor who plays Hitler is speaking terrible German . The second problem is that the audio in no way of course matches the fake subtitles , therefore the audio would best be fixed or removed. Third , I lost relatives at the hands of the Nazis, including my grandfather and my family lost all our farmland and dairy business. I would be a billionaire now if it were not for Mr. Hitler____ All of my family were German citizens and I the only American citizen among them . We did not know of any Germans who had any love for Nazis.____ Sorry for the HIjack , I just think that video is lame ( I could use stronger words ), from my perspective :-):-):-):-)! ( smiles added for polite decorum only)

Sorry moderators, I just had to write this ! The Grateful Dead are about musical joy in my life , NOT Nazi's. But then everyone is entitled to their opinion. That is the beauty of the American constitution .
It is mature to agree to disagree with a smile.

I have to agree with Wolf. I found the video to be in poor taste and just not funny. What's next, a video of captured Africans chained together in the hull of a nineteenth century ship with subtitles exclaiming how excited they are to be traveling to Chicago for the shows?

I didn't bother to watch it, having seen many other variants of the same video. I don't find them particularly offensive, but I also don't find them particularly funny.

Sorry I liked the video...take it from the point of view of Hitler being a hardcore Grateful Dead fan and it is funny...of course, genocide and asset theft is not funny and my ancestors were subject to that too (I'm Scottish, and the English...let's leave it at that...) we humans have a lot of hardship in our history, just more recent for some...I usually find humor in horror as a coping mechanism...Damn, this went dark fast, sorry, please go back to debating the merits of a Dead concert...Tony.

Atrocities of treatment towards fellow human beings (actually everything on this planet) are daily occurences.
It is our individual behavior and reaction to them that will define their impact.

With that said the Dead should certainly come to Alpine Valley in East Troy - hands down a much more natural setting then Soldier Field.
Parking on grass, seating on grass, smoking grass vs. Concrete, steel and asphalt.

Pauldo:

I'd concur that Alpine Valley would be a preferred location. Love what I saw and heard there many, many years ago. I also agree that parking on grass and seating on grass if preferable to what's available at Soldier Field. Technically, I can't speak to whether it's preferable to smoke grass versus concrete, steel, or asphalt since I've never tried to do that with the latter three.

(Shakes head slowly with face in hand, refraining from comment)

Yes, I could do Alpine - maybe even with Trey. Saw them there in '80, '82, '84, 85, & '86 - a fine time was had by all!

Peter (and before you ask about the gaps, in '81 when they swung through here the band I was doing monitors for was on the road, always a city ahead or behind them - not the same venues - and in '83 they did Poplar Creek instead; good show, but not the Alpine experience.....)

Don't get me wrong - I love the Dead, and still love Phish, just not as much as I used to 20 years ago and I don't think Trey is the right guitarist for this thing - would much rather see them with Scott Murawski or even Matt Salata!

The suggestion of Warren Haynes in the parody video peaked my interest . . . That guy has a high level of diverse talent.

Rush - no Milwaukee stop this year. :-(
My buddy can get decent seats whenever they play at the Marcus Ampitheater.

Just for the record:

Phish is a decent band; they just a writer, singer & lead guitarist. Anyone who thinks they've picked up the Dead's mantle never saw the Dead.

Warren is great with Govt Mule, but less so with ABB, and he just can't bring it for the Dead - love him, but it's not what he does.

A friend used to tell me with every new Kansas, Van Halen, and Rush album "No, this one is different - you'll like this one!" They never were, and I never did.

I also feel The Dead are not The Grateful Dead without Jerry, but...I would go see them play if they swung by my way.
Also because...I saw a number of GD shows when Bruce Hornsby was playing with them. They always got something interesting going with him - sometimes something brilliant.

gee a thread with legs.. lol
heres my take
i d rather hear trey then see tray/ facial gyrators turn me off. v kadelik? trey. has his own sound and a good voice. i no like clones.... and hornsby is a nice plus.
it would have been cool if they could have brought in some of the other guys who have sat in
like haynes, kadelik, barraco etc. for a few tunes

as far as it not being the grateful dead?
if i follow the logic.....
jerry is dead therefore it cannot be the grateful dead
ok
therefore the grateful dead stopped existing in 1973 when pig pen died and then that band stopped existing in 1990 when brent died.

the band is the grateful dead...membership is fluid..
ps- i get a snow day. 24" coming my way

Jerry Garcia.
I can't think of anyone I miss more in music.
Its been hard watching the boys try to work without him.
I understand what Lesh had to do, but its not for me.
It ended in 95.
RIP Jerry.

Here's an interesting and disturbing story about the ticket sales and other aspects of these shows. It helps to explain why no one I know who mailed in got tickets.

yeah that article speaks volumes.thanks for the link.

I found this quote online,

"The alternate media are becoming important and viable alternatives to playing live. Records, videos, that kind of thing. They're going to start to count for something. Because there's only a limited amount of us-time available to us."

Jerry Garcia

and I just like this one.. :-)

"I read somewhere that 77 per cent of all the mentally ill live in poverty. Actually, I'm more intrigued by the 23 per cent who are apparently doing quite well for themselves."

You know being a big fan of both bands and attending way more shows than I remember, this is just a little sad. The choice of the venue is just sad. I was at the last show and have no interest in going back. Since the dead is no more and it was always about the music, this is just a poor way to celebrate the music driven by money instead. I'm not saying it's the musicians. I won't be going because no concert is worth that much cash in a venue that size in the middle of a large city. I won't be watching pay per view either. I will just wait for the DVD in the cheap bin in 20 years if I live that long. I will still have the memory of the last show at the field and I don't really want to mess with that. Mostly because it was a special show for me that had nothing to do with it being Jerry's last. Would love to see the show but not in this setting.
