I count today as my 2nd birthday; I was born 59 years ago on April 1st, but 40 years ago today I flatlined 4 times after a car wreck. They were able to hold on to me because I'd made it to the emergency room - largely because my best friend at the time, Paul Mulchahy, climbed out of the wreckage, shoved his shirt against my face and said "Hold this there and sit down!".
Today, on the 40th anniversary, I learned Paul died last month. We hadn't been in contact for many years, but somehow today that doesn't ease it any. I repeat my title - Well, crap..............

I am sorry to hear about your friend. Even though you say you hadn't been in touch for a long time, you certainly have a strong connection that will never be forgotten. My condolences to you.

Not knowing anything else about his life, I do know that he make it possible for you to be here with us; and for that I am grateful. Thank you Paul.

My only regret living to this age is that you live long enough to witness the great circle of life spin many times, and we lose people. When I was a snotty youngster, you never lost anyone save for ancient relatives and the occasional friend in an accident, but it was rare. I've now been to enough to where I'm only going to one more funeral, and I won't know I'm there . . . . and while I truly feel they've all gone on to better things, they would, for those of us still toiling in this sometimes frighteningly cruel world, tell us to carry on for both them and ourselves. And it's not always easy . . . .

I long since realized that if it were up to me, they would all still be with me. But it's not up to me, and I can only trust that He knows better, and I have to live that faith and reality that this is how it is supposed to be for reasons I'll never know. They don't call it faith for nothing.

Wow, sorry to hear this (although I'm very grateful for your friend's intrepid rescue of you).
