ok- We've all heard about the slaughter of Cecil.
This wasn't hunting. They lured the lion out w food, shot it with a bow and arrow and tracked it for forty hours before shooting it. Decapitated and skinned him.
I'm not big on hunting,.BUT i understand that it can be used to thin out over populated animals i,e, deer, some bears.

President Obama has stated that he will review the petition when it reaches 100,000
In this case there are 30,000 lions left on the planet. EVERY year 600 are killed=2% Do the math! Black Rhinos are now endangered due to hunting for nothing more than bragging to your buddies. Tigers also

Signed.
You kill something to eat, that's one thing; trophy hunting is another altogether.
Canned trophy poaching? We don't use the required language in the Wickershams' living room.

Back in the Days of Empire, in a much-less enlightened world, hunting dangerous big African Game (miss the shot, you're eaten, trampled, etc.) was considered sport for those who could afford to go the 'Dark Continent' and stare down a bull elephant or Cape Buffalo while it was charging you and deliver the coup de grace, falling (hopefully) at your feet. Think Hemingway, double rifles in 500 Nitro Express, guides, gun bearers, the Gilded Age.

At least back then, there were far larger numbers of these things, and occasionally it was required when a dangerous animal would go rogue and they had to be put down to save lives and property, and occasionally is still required today, if the animal just can't be relocated.

But that was a long time ago, and a different era in our relationship with these animals.

Personally, I have NO trouble with a fair, licensed hunt and a quick, humane kill on something that will feed your family, no problem at all, I eaten lots of venison, and the occasional squirrel or game bird. I love guns, and I have lots of friends that are very responsible 'fill the freezer' hunters. I often think I may be happier shopping at Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop (where I've YET to find a Bass) as I am at Guitar Center.

I have utterly no patience with killing for the thrill of it, thereby wasting an animal for no other reason than gratification. This would include 'trophy hunting', where you're simply shooting for a head for your wall or a hide for a rug. For the life of me, I can in no way imagine that these magnificent beasts were made just to be a conversation piece for some Walter Mitty who has the budget to go to Africa, but his b***s are so little that instead of manning up and facing this big cat head on, he pops it with a crossbow, tracks it bleeding and hurt for the next 40 hours, and finally shoots it to end the suffering with a gun. And all this after attracting it by dragging a bloody bait behind a pickup truck to 'chum' it into range.

I have no way to say in this polite company what I'm thinking, and just how bad I'd like to FEED this guy to a lion . . . . a little at a time.

When I was a baby lawyer, my boss represented a famous race car driver who had been arrested for illegal bear hunting in Alaska. A guide, (who also was arrested in the case), took him up in a helicopter and flew around until they saw a bear. Then they chased the bear with the helicopter until the animal was exhausted, at which time they landed the helicopter and shot the bear. I was glad I didn't have to work on that case. I never understood the "sport" in such activity. I remember thinking at the time that it would be a lot fairer if we could arm the critters and teach them to shoot back.

Joey: Considering what they had in stock the last few times I've been in a Guitar Center, I think I'd have more fun in the Bass Pro Shop too - and I don't even like guns or play bass!

Send as many petitions to the Tyrant as you like, the Lion is still dead, unfortunately.

True...but if this actually goes through, maybe the next asshole with 50K who wants to kill a lion will think twice about doing it.

As a reminder, the posting guidelines for this club strongly suggest that politics be left behind when joining discussions on this board. When statements that are divisive and inflammatory are posted, the cohesiveness and spirit of our community suffers.

While it is understandable that we may have strong opinions about politics and politicians, there are other venues in which to voice one's opinions.

Please try to keep this board free of the toxic speech that covers so many of the other discussion boards on the internet.

And thank you to all of you for making this club the community that it is.

Well I don't understand it either and I am not against 'kill to eat' as I have tasted some very fine grouse, pheasant, duck and venison but getting a kick out of this type of entertainment is beyond me, especially coming from a health care professional !
I would sign your petition but it is only for you USA guys !
Personally I would like to use him as a makawari board to see how long he can withstand the punches and kicks before he passes out !

I am in Canada so my name won't count; I am amazed that such hunting still happens though...you'd think anyone would be like "ah, no, they're endangered..." but there was a hunter on CNN a couple days ago who said the crazy fees hunters pay for these hunts go towards paying for the preserves...if it really is sacrificing a few for the greater good I understand it but I think that a better funding solution is there; charge more for photo shoots or something...the manner in which it was done is so sad too; there is NO glory in that, no matter what he thinks...may he be covered in peanut butter and fed to Racoons...Tony.
