Anybody else out there in Alembicland get tix for the Philster and his buds on their East Coast swing? I got mine as an early TMFM birthday gift (To: Me, From: Me, LOL!). PLAF are playing at the NJPAC on my B'day (i.e., 11/22, and again on 11/23/05)in that renaissance capital of the East: lovely downtown Newark(!) NJ, LOL! As usual, I missed the presale from both the Dead's and Lesh's own Tix sites. In additon, NJPAC tix are ONLY available thru the NJPAC...TicketMaster, Ron Delsner and StubHub are apparently shut-out on this one. I am dissapointed that despite the 40th Anniversary year for the Dead, and at least two successive huge tours in the two years prior, they didn't see fit to tour. Weir, Hart, and Lesh are all actively touring, so I don't know what gives. Regardless, "Lesh Is More!", so I'm psyched! Chris Robinson (ex-Black Crowes, current Mr. Kate Hudson, LOL!) is touring with Lesh as a featured "friend". Ck out his website for more info: http://www.phillesh.net/ As a bonus, a really nice version of Lesh's best ditty (IMHO), aka, "Unbroken Chain" automatically loads when you enter his site, so turn your speakers on and enjoy. The tune plays in it's entirety, and despite some out-of-tune vocals by Phil (c'mon, this IS Phil we're talking about, LOL!) with no background vocals, the musicianship and arrangement are excellent...lot's of nice guitar work by Jimmy Herring (the Garcia-sounding stuff) and Barry Sless (? I'll be seeing Phil at Vegoose, right here in town, along with Widespread Panic, the Meters, Trey Anastasio, String Cheese Incident, Govt. Mule, moe., Umphrey's Mcgee, North Mississippi Allstars, Dave Matthews & Friends, and a bunch more. There are also a slew of bands playing in the clubs and music venues for late night shows. All in all it should be a fine Halloween of music in Sin City. Tom | ||

Kevin; that's a very nice version of Unbroken Chain indeed!! Herring is a wonderful guitar player. Is the part tacked on the end after the last vocal just a new section or is that from a different song? Thanks for letting me know about this version; I enjoyed listening to it. Unbroken Chain is one of my all time favorites as well. | ||

Dave: You're welcome! I love that tune as well. I'm betting that was a rehearsal and/or sound check track. There is no info on the site about that track that I've seen so far. I love that end part as well. I must have listened to that track over a dozen times...it is truly sublime! I keep hitting refresh to get it again right after it plays out, LOL! If I get that version at the show I'm attending, it'll truly be a great Birthday gift for me! Phil's voice is quite shaky these days, but given his age and recent liver transplant status, I think he's doing just fine. He's never been, even in his prime, considered a great vocalist anyway. His contributions (on lead vocals) to the Dead, though sparse, are great: "Box Of Rain" and "UC" being the finest, IMHO. He's always been in decent physical shape, and he's very careful about his diet (especially after the surgery), so hopefully we'll have him for many years to come. Cheers, Kevin |
