So last night I dreamt I dropped in at Alembic HQ, only in the dream it was set in a rustic locale - kind of like Lake Tahoe. The scene in the dream was that they were moving the workshop, and it turns out back in the 70's they just put up unused planks of Coco Bolo, Amboyna Burl, Flamed Maple, etc. for the walls of the shop. There were plans afoot to turn this wood back into basses. So I ordered an Amboyna Burl Series II 5-string, and actually pulled the top-wood for my new bass right off the wall. I do frequently dream about my instruments, and my Alembics especially. My Series I is back at HQ for a bit of TLC, so I must be "psychically projecting" to check in on her. It was a very vivid dream. This is the only group of people who could understand a crazy post like this :-) |

I don't often see my alembics in my dreams but I do have many dreams where I'm in the music industry either playing with, being friends with or being around musicians that i admire in my waking world. A dream I had last weekend was that was at a music industry party and I got persuaded, at a weeks notice, to play bass for ACDC on Stadium tour in the UK. When asked what the set list was they said. Just learn all our stuff because we decide on the moment what to play! I rushed to my mates house who is a big ACDC fan and confiscated her entire collection to learn. However on the big day I walked out on a pre-gig stage walk to be introduced to the massive crowd and then later on the way to the stage I got cold feet wondering if they would play stuff I hadn't really grasped properly and got into a panic and since the show was about to start, I woke up to avoid any the situation. |

Wish I slept long enough to dream *anything*. =) I do get it though... playing music is my number-one escape/release/outlet/what-have-you, and these instruments are the tangible link to doing what I love. That said, I have now put visiting Alembic on my "bucket list"... I'd really love to see the shop, and meet the folks who built my bass (soon to be plural) one day. I have an old friend out there in California... I could crash her place... hmm. =) |

Before this thread and talk about dreaming of making Alembics from the wood in the walls, I'd have thought this was a nightmare:

Well, I've heard of coffee table basses. I hope Cracker Barrel doesn't see this and get any ideas . . . . Somehow, though, it makes perfect sense to have a Telecaster made out of knotty-pine. Judging by the knot directly south of the bridge plate, evidently this table blank wasn't knot-matched. Think IKEA sells those tables ? Joey |

Twenty years ago, Taylor made a guitar out of a fork-lift pallet. Supposedly, it sounded quite good. Here's a story about it: http://www.guitaradventures.com/taylor-pallet-guitar-story Bill, tgo |
