It was true of heart !

Here is mine :
Dear Phil , your musical mentation is a constant inspiration to me ! You have infused so much magic into our world of music and for that I am forever grateful and also for that essence of illumination in our world of music and bass style that you have shown us with classical counterpoint in the moment in so many variations that has become an automatic method of jam band bass playing for so many of us ! ( me as well Sir )

Happy Birthday Phil! Thanks for years of inspiration and blissful memories. Keep em coming...

As a birthday treat for those who haven't heard this yet, a link to most likely the earliest recording of Phil. Live performance in 1964 by Phil and Tom Constanten. Excellent recording which can be either streamed or downloaded. Plus a link that includes a bit of background from TC about the performance.

Also a fan of TC's playing. I was lucky enough to see him play with the Dead four times. Many years later I had the privilege of playing two gigs with him. Nice guy, smart and definitely a trip to speak to even if you get lost along the way trying to follow his train of thought. Performing Mountains of the Moon with him remains a highlight of my years playing Dead music.

The piano piece on the archive indicates exactly why he was brought in to work on Anthem of the Sun and both pieces as an aggregate show that Phil was the original guy keeping it weird in the Dead.

Phil will be giving his Alembic a serious workout at the Capitol Theater tonight.
