Recently there has been an ad on tv in the US. The ad is a public relations marketing spot for the oil and gas industry. The soundtrack for the ad is The Youngbloods recording of "Get Together", the sixties counter-culture anthem written by Dino Valenti. I did a little research and found that Valenti sold the rights to the song back in the sixties; but I don't know who owns the rights now. To me, it somehow seems wrong that this symbol of the counter culture is being used as a marketing tool for the oil and gas industry. Where do I sign up to protest??

I agree, those greedy b*stards have got some b*lls for using that tune! I'm reminded of how one-sided they are every week as I dump nearly $100 into my tank for each fill-up of black gold, I mean, #2 Diesel! It costs 1/3 of the price (that's 2/3 less) to refine, but it's still $.30-$0.50 MORE than a gallon of petrol!!!

I hear you Dave. When you think of the spirit songs like "Get Together" were composed under, that would be the 60's, and how they are being used, it's very sad indeed. I understand the effort to reach people using music, but I wonder if it may backfire. If your company is trying to break down some barriers, or open new doors with the intent to improve the human condition, then fine. In this case as in many others, Beatle & Led Zep music, I doubt that has occurred.

That being said, those who know and understand the essence of meaningful songs, will look to the people misusing them with contempt. Hardly the effect any PR type would hope for....I think?

Anyway Dave, I'm in!

I agree whole heartedly and would like to add Nike who started it all with Revolution (or maybe my ire should be directed at Mr. Jackson who approved the use).

Dave,
You had me confused at first when I saw the title of "Get Together". I assumed you were trying to arrange a NC Alembic get together.

The thought occurred to me, we could actually set something up at petitiononline.com or one of the similar sites. After all, there are five of us now!

Keith; I heard today that Alembic might be shipping my Essence out this week. As I recall, one of the NC members wanted to try it out.

Isn't there something in the bible or the constitution about that ?

Sign me up, Dave!! At least we haven't been exposed to any Ford or Chevy pick up commercials with "Truckin'" playing in the backgound. Hats off to the Good Old Grateful Dead for steering clear of the omnipresent corporate malignancy that has infected most corners of this planet.

If I thought I was gonna live long enough to hear Zeppelin used as backing music for Cadillac commercials, I'd have just died years ago.

And you know the hell of it? While it's very possible that the rights to the Youngbloods' tune is not owned by them anymore, I know for sure that Page owns ALL the rights to Zeppellin's catalogue. Surely he can't need the money. Or maybe he nailed them good and that's why GM is in such rough financial straits!

Let's not forget "Catch the Wind" by Dylan getting commercial usage as well. And "Dust In The Wind" to sell SUVs?

Sometimes I just don't get it...

If you could make money by doing nothing and promoting your music at the same time, would you do it? I would. Music is a product. Gas is a product. Alembics are a product. I never understood what all the fuss was over musicians becoming successful. Sting got paid and pushed his album sales over the top with his Jaguar ad. Members of the boards here go on ad nauseum about instruments, strings, effects, cases, amps, cabs etc. They are all things for sale and we all routinely tout what we like to others and argue the passions of our souls. In effect we are helping to sell products using this forum. We applaud the purchases of others and boast about our acquisitions. When is enough money too much money? Makes those custom series 2's easier to attain no?
Well, make your protest count and boycott where you must.
"I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac" comes to mind at the moment.
Don't illegally download music. Then the artist won't have to sell it to secure their retirement.
Sorry for the rant if it appears ascerbic. I teach emotionally disturbed teens and sometimes it gets me cranky.

Danno - That's funny! I get cranky too about that sort of stuff. It's just that us old farts like to think that the music mattered. It really did at one time. At least it did to us. Count me in on the protest too! I would think that anyone over the age of 45 or so would feel this way. If you don't remember this song playing on the radio the first time around, then you wouldn't get it anyway. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just that you missed out on some good stuff.

I don't mind the music used for commercials in principle. Sometimes I wonder about the relevance of a particular song/product combination. For example the recent ebay commercial playing Daydream Believer in the background. BTW who remembers the Air Force commercial in the 70s that used Ginger Baker's Toad?

An Alembic meeting in NC? Sign me on!

It's like an anarchy club! It just doesn't make sense. I mean, I heard a symphony orchestra playing Queen for Gods' sake! Music makes a statement. That statement should never change. Most of the time I think it doesn't really change, only the interpretation changes, or maybe it's just that the ad people feel that if they use a song people loved once, they might be inclined to buy their products!!!

I'll sign up for the protest, but NC is way too far from Edinburgh!

"When is enough money too much money?"

Good point Danno..I was a little shocked to see Paul McCartney in a Fidelity commerical.

Is there nothing sacred in this world ?
I think the 1st one to set me off was the Nike commercial using Revolution...ahhhhhhh

I'm gonna start making up the protest signs when I get home tonite.

Thanks be that the advertisers over here don't have enough money to corrupt quite as many things as they do in the US.

It's a real eye-opener whenever I go home to Texas and see what the ads are on TV! The last time I was home, about 2 years ago, they were running all of the drug advertisements with the disclaimers that were sometimes longer than the actual advertisement!

ichat would be great for any meeting, no matter where it is!

Danno, love a good rant, keep it up. A thought if I may. If I were Brian Wilson, I'd sell "409" to GM in a minute. If I'm Eric Clapton, nobody has enough money to associate " Tears In Heaven " with tennis shoes or hemorrhoid creams.

I think Wierd Al could come up with an appropriate tear/hemorrhoid song. Hell, I could.

Sad day when I heard "Revolution" selling shoes. It's like when I found out there was no Santa last year. What, Jacko couldn't sell "Beat It" to the abstinence crowd?

Ok; here's what I'm thinking at the moment. In the instant case of "Get Together" we don't know who owns the rights; and it would be beneficial if we had that information before we proceed further. So before we call in the TV news crews to cover our demonstration down on the town square, does anyone know how to get the ownership info?

Also, at the moment we don't know the exact name of the oil and gas industry group that's running the ad. It's shown on the ad, so next time someone sees it, post it here.

Might this help ?

According to this, the song was penned by Dino Valenti and Bob Cullen.

I have found this, though I'm not sure what it means (Chet Powers is another name for Dino Valenti):

I wish some big conglomerate wanted to use a DOOMTREE song! Then i could order a custom series 2! Instead i have to make due with a used Rouge 5 on Thursday. Perhaps Ortho man-eating plant food? Family plots using our title song Down Below? GE using "The Light" from our cd available at Tower, Virgin, Sam Goody, Best Buy, Amazon.com, ebay etc. We have tshirts, golf shirts, hats, beenies, baby doll shirts and a Xmas single for free download! www.doomtree.com
maybe Sir Paul will help?
