Sam, there's one Wilde quote I picked up years ago, something about a cigarette as "the perfect type of a perfect pleasure" - but I've since given up tobacco. Meanwhile, my caffeine levels are back to acceptable, thank you. |

I love to slap!!! I have slapped an entire show on more than one occasion. mainly older funk with a solid beat and a few chops thrown in just for grins. Just build up that knuckle and wail. try to drive the frets through that fret board. Dale |

Ajish4, grab some old 'The Archers' albums and hear what slapping can do in a church setting! I have played guitar for 39 years but about 30 years ago I heard a funk band here in Portland at Up the Down Staircase and they had a bass player on a BC Rich Eagle that blew me away. I started also playing bass after seeing him play (I also purchased a 1979 BC Rich Koa Mockingbird new). Having said that, I really don't like to solo much for the simple reason that I don't think the audience gives a rip (drums stop, very bad! Time for bass solo). Also, I'd rather play a guitar solo, but that's my own thing. Holding down the groove is an art in itself, and took me a number of years to begin to appreciate it. I'll play slap, thumb, normal, pick, fingerpicking style, anything that sounds good to me and not worry about it. |

i dotn feel bad anymore.. or inadeqaute i just cant seem to get the hang of slapping, but i am not keen on it. I've plucked with my fingers for 30ish years,i can also finger pick and just started using a pick for about 9 months now.... so i feel pretty good about my ability to alter my style. i can pick my nose though and i am real good at that! -lol the only thing i would REALLY like to slap is some of my wiseass customers... |

Once you start slapping its hard to stop..... BEWARE. The best instruction on slapping I have ever found is a vhs tape called The Slap Bass Program with Alexis Sklaevski. He is one of the best players I have ever seen. |

I slap just well enough to embarrass myself. I can do a passable job on the Warwicks I've played for some reason, but I can reliably do only the very basics on the Series I with the pickup in the way. Hence, I only do it when I absolutely have to because it's not fun for me (or graceful) at all. And for some reason I can only pop with my middle finger. I do enjoy soloing a bit, though it's something relatively new for me and probably makes people wince when I do. Laying down a groove is where it's at, and I think I'm pretty damn good at that. I'm primarily a finger player (and I use all 5 of them) who sometimes uses a pick for tunes with static 8ths and/or tunes that need the bass to really cut through. John |

Guys, as JE is my main influence I do it his way. I have never learned to slap thumbstyle. So instead of the thumb I use my first finger in typewriter-style slapping strongly in combination with my small finger for the pops. Surely not the classic style but 100% JE style. Oliver (Spyderman) |

Don't slap at all. Never 'got' it, got tired of the inept wearing it out in ALL the wrong places, never played a lot of tunes that needed it. If I do like it, it's usually when it's worked in smoothly, like Marcus Miller. I do use a pick, and between that and my fingers, it gives me two sounds that cover it all for me. It's old school in a way, but a lot of people never hear a pick away from aggressive styles. Works great for country or pop or light jazz. J o e y |

. . . although I did have a friend in Texas who played 'RoundAbout' note for note like Squire's part on the original, all thumb slap and finger pulls, and it was just perfect ! ! But then again, it was certainly in the neighborhood of Squire's tone. J o e y |

The new marcus Miller DVD (which is superb and highly recommended btw) has him playing 'Teen Town' entirely slapped as one of the bonus tracks. Naturally it sounds much more aggressive than Jacos' original version but it's still absolutely brilliant. Graeme |

Yes, I just ran across it. Region 2, so I'll have to wait. Also, a bit steep at $40! I also just ran across this interesting little thing; LEGENDS- LIVE AT MONTREUX 1997. Eric Clapton, guitar, vocals; David Sanborn, sax; Joe Sample, keys; Marcus Miller, bass; and Steve Gadd, drums. |
