Kinda scarey, listening to the news at lunch today I heard a story about the Illinois general assembly introducing a bill that would ban tribute bands in Illinois. And, they're suggesting other states across the country do the same. They were being assisted in their efforts by one of the Supremes. (missed the name when a truck went by) I have several friends playing in Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Steely Dan tribute bands..looks like they could be out of work soon. Seems like they're running out of things to legislate, so now they're digging. Gary |

According to the article, "the bill would not affect tribute bands and other nostalgia acts .. in which it is clear to ticket buyers that they are not paying to see the original artists". |

Reading the article closely, it is not tribute bands that are being complained about. It is frauds posing as the real thing. The key element is whether the presentation might confuse the consumer into believing they are getting something they aren't. A band billed as "Fred C. Dobbs Tribute to the Beatles" for example would likely pose no problems. A band billed as "A Night With The Beatles" might confuse some consumer (at least one whose been living in a cave since 1979) into believing they were actually paying to see the fab 4. In fact the article states: "The bill would not affect tribute bands and other nostalgia acts—breathe easy, Elvis impersonators—in which it is clear to ticket buyers that they are not paying to see the original artists." Bill, tgo, Esq. P.S. Two brownie points to anyone who can ID "Fred C. Dobbs" P.P.S. Dave, you posted yours while I was still writing mine. Of course it is not surprising that you can say it more succinctly than a lawyer can. LOL (Message edited by lbpesq on January 27, 2006) |

Yes..the story read a little different than the radio newcast, in which they mentioned 'tribute' bands repeatedly. And that was a reputable news station, WMAQ. I like the blurb about turning over their profit and facing up to $5000 fine. |

Hmm Another article in the Chicago Sun-Times: "Exempt from the propsed law are advertised tribute bands and acts that have at least one member of the original recording group who is legally entitled to the name" |

Bill, I thought about trying to figure out who Fred C. Dobbs was, but then I was worried that a brownie point from you might cause some problems on the random screening. I know who Corporal Nobby Nobbs is, though. I'm pretty certain he's never been in a tribute band, but he might've made an appearance in _Soul Music_. Brad |

I remember a "60 Minutes" program several years ago that exposed a few of the old Motown acts from the '60s. The name rights were owned by someone else who put together some singers who kind of looked and sounded close enough to the originals. They toured as the real band. A few of the new singers were interviewed and admitted that there were no original members in the group. IMO that stinks big time but appears to be legal. Rich |

Brad: George and bassdr got it right, above. Fred C. Dobbs embarked upon a gold mining expedition with two buddies: Curtin and Howard, the old prospector. Among their adventures they came upon a gentleman named "Gold Hat" who pretended to be a federale. When asked to show his badge to prove the law enforcement affiliation, Mr. Hat (the Gold one, not Mr. Garrison's puppet from "South Park") replies that he does not possess such a badge and doesn't need any. ("Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges"). Other notable adventures include Howard's Happy Dance, Fred winning the lottery, Howard meets the native girls, Fred almost gets bit by a Gila Monster, and gold dust in the wind. This is all from one of my all time favorite movies: "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" starring Humphrey Bogart as the paranoid Fred C. Dobbs, directed by the legendary John Huston, and featuring John's father Walter as Howard, the grizzled wise old prospector. A must see. Is this too far off-thread or is there actually an Alembic connection here somewhere? How about they drink beer in the movie and beer is a common point of discussion around here? Bill, tgo |
