...the rest of you will think I'm crazy! Jeff recently posted, and was seconded by Bill, that he wished Phil was playing an Alembic. Bill stated in the same thread that he had recently spoken with Phil, who was apparently unaware they were still in business. I, for one, would love to hear Phil playing one with the advances in amplification and recording technology that have been made since the early '80's, sooooo.... Why don't we buy him one? Of course, we would need to check with Susan and company to make sure there's no unpublicized bad blood between Phil and Alembic, which might explain why he switched so long ago and never came back. But if it's OK with Alembic, it wouldn't be the first time fans had given an artist an instrument, and Phil has certainly contributed to my musical development and personal happiness over the years, so why not? If we could get, theoretically, 15 of us financially stable Alembicans to each pony up a grand or so, we could get Phil a nice bass for us to enjoy. We could either spec it out ourselves and have it built, or just provide the funds and let him provide the details. I think it would be more fun for us to build it, but if we couldn't agree then maybe not. Based on what he's been playing over the past 20 years, I'm thinking something along the lines of a Series II on a Rogue body with 26 frets and a quilted maple top. Of course there would have to be some sort of bada** inlay on it. Does anybody know the details of the neck dimensions on his Moduluses (Moduli?) me buy phil a bass? after all the cashish i have spent on the dead? i emailed him through philzone to let me bring the wolf over to him in ny and linked him to the custom archive and i mentioned i would be at the sat night show at the hammerstein he never answered -- not that i was expecting one but they did open with direwolf./... coincidence? i dont buy it for a second that he doesnt know alembic is still around oh btw- susan mentioned to me once that he claimed he didnt know alembic made 6 strings... i have a better idea let phil pay for my tribute bass..... lmao | ||

While I, like Flax, have squandered a small fortune Phil and Co's way over the years, I'd chip in to get Phil an Alembic. While I'm certain he can afford anything he wants to play, I'd contribute to the cause. Phil appears to be the only one from the Dead camp (not counting Messrs. Barlow and Hunter) that still wants us to have free Dead soundboards, so I'd throw him a bone for that alone. Anybody else with me? yes, let's buy the multi-millionaire a bass. I'm as big a Phil fan as it gets but, I don't think so. I, like some of the rest of you, have paid for Phil's gear over the years. I say "let Phil buy his own Alembic!" start chanting that at the next show  | ||

Hey, I've got another idea! Let's all chip in and buy me a Series II 12 string! I only recently found out Alembic makes these and I don't have one! And I've been on TV a few times! And I met Phil in a bathroom! And I just went over 1000 posts! And my name rhymes with "Phil". And it would be a great gag to play on my wife who thinks I have too many guitars already! I'm guessing from articles I've read in the past that Phil has developed a very good relationship with the people at Modulus; a relationship that has probably strengthened over what is now quite a long period of time. If I remember correctly, I believe the design of his instruments is a collaborative effort between Phil and Modulus. I'm saying this to suggest that if you did buy an Alembic for Phil it seems likely that his Modulus would still be his instrument of choice. But I do imagine that he would appreciate the gesture. | ||

Come on, guys, tell me how you REALLY feel....:-) Ok, so it's 75% against. You all definitely have good points as to why not. I guess I was thinking more in terms of this being as much a gift for ourselves as for Phil. I think it would be great to hear him play and think "Phil's playing our bass," but on the other hand, it would be a pretty big letdown if he just stuck it in a corner. Well, I'm certainly open to the idea still, but it ain't gonna happen with just Kevin and myself splitting the bill. | ||

Screw Phil, lets build some communal instruments and work out a timeshare program!!!! This thread cracks me up, because I saw Phil on Tuesday, and here's what I was thinking~ The Godfather is due for an electronics upgrade. I heard it when they were checking line levels, and man did it hum... I guess Phil is playing it in venues w/ little RF interference?!!? Would Ron be willing to go thru the Godfather? Is Phil aware that a trip back to the mothership is an option?!? For all the talk about Phil being impartial to equipment & instruments, he seems awfully nostalgic towards that bass lately.... The very least that anyone of us could do is let him know about our love for our instruments & everyone in Santa Rosa who builds them... BTW~ Bill, you're the one of several people I know, who have cornered Phil Lesh in the bathroom.... What's up with that?!?!? | ||

Mike: I don't want anyone getting the wrong impression. I most certainly did not "corner" Phil in the bathroom. This was following a talk he gave at a downtown hotel. After the talk was over and Phil had left, I stopped at the hotel men's room on the way out. When I entered it was quite crowded and I headed for a stall. Upon exiting there was Phil using the urinal, and a guy standing next to him who HAD cornered Phil in the bathroom. I remember thinking sorry for Phil and that the guy should at least have enough sense to let Phil piss in peace. Of course when Phil stepped up to the sink next to me and we were both washing hands, a casual conversation was more appropriate IMHO. Bill, tgo | ||
