Has anyone got experience with these toys? For those not in the know, POG and HOG are a couple recent effects from Electro Harmonix. The POG is a full-featured octave box and the HOG takes that concept several steps further in terms of harmonizing off the played pitch.

Personally, I am more interested in the POG. Absent negative feedback, I will probably buy one within the next week or two. I just thought I'd see if anyone here has direct experience first.

Well, it would seem no one has tried these things. Anyone have an interest to hear about it if I get one?

Of course, Robert. post away if you get 'em. I've still got an old Small Stone phase shifter from the 70s.

Well, I have a POG now and I love it. It isn't going to be a super versatile toy, but it makes 2-3 very usable tones. Played solo, it really stands out too much, but it blends very nicely in the band context. I'm using it in what is effectively a three piece, so there is often some space that needs filling. It helps create a very plush canvas for the guitarist to paint over.

It is definitely the best effect-generated eight string simulator I have heard. I haven't heard any bass-generated POG samples, so I will try to create some simple ones to display the tone one of these days.

Bob, I've been toying with the idea of an octave pedal for several years now. I've tried out several but haven't found one that I liked. If I can find one that has the sound I like I could deal with how it works. If I have to play a low note and let it add a higher octave that would be okay. If I have to play the higher note and let it add the lower, still okay. Whatever would get a pretty good octave with a decent sound, I'll work with it. I know I will not suddenly have an 8-string Alembic but I was hoping for more than I have seen so far.
There are two things I have not been happy with. First is that the ones I have tried color the tone too much. It sounds a bit like a synth bass, pretty distorted. It doesn't sound bad but I didn't buy an Alembic so I could color the tone beyond recognition. Second is that sometimes it added in another note like a fifth. I play lots of non-root notes. If the octave effect plays the I-VI-octave, that doesn't work at all.
I don't live near a good music store. I don't often have the opportunity to try these out. When I do I usually have the family with me. I don't put them through sitting for an hour of listening to me play the same thing over and over. I usually end up experimenting with the effect myself because the stores are GC-type places. The clerk can just plug the thing in and stand there and say "Sounds pretty cool, huh?" That's about all the help I've been able to get. I still consider myself in the market for an octave if there's one out there that will do what I want.
Bob, I would love to hear some on-off comparisons of the POG. I'm glad you like it. Thanks for mentioning that it sounds good in the band even though it doesn't sound that great solo. That's very usable info for me since I have only heard them solo. Thanks.

Rich- try the EBS Octabass, it's the only effect I use with Flame Koa Essence and I really like the sound. Michael

Michael, the octabass is the only one that I spent any real time with. Maybe I just need to learn how to set it. Do you have it add a lower octace or a higher one? How do you set it? Does it ever add in tones other than the octave? Thanks.

Sorry Rich, I missed your question. The Octabass Blue pedal I have does only the octave below. I turn the octave knob up until I have the same volume as the real note in bypass and leave the knob for the real tone turned all the way down. It only gives me the low octave that way and I like the sound. It captures well and is very quiet. When switched out it is a true bypass and does not change the sound of the bass at all. Michael
