I just bought some cocobolo for a top wood to use for a bass sometime in the future.I live in Hawaii and the weather can be dry to humid and everything in between.Right now I have it covered in plastic and laying down flat with some weight on top of it so it dosen't warp. Is this a good way to store it? |

Ever considered a rectangular instrument? I wouldn't have the heart to lose even one millimeter of that board!! It doesn't look real. It's almost as if the grain pattern was drawn on the wood! Who/Where did you find this piece? Wait a minute! I think I've got it! we're looking at spalted cocobolo! Wow I didn't think that was possible. Mike (Message edited by jlpicard on April 09, 2006) |

I can conjure a lot of images from that wood but a lady in a flimsy blouse isn't one of them. Must have something to do with the long North Atlantic winters. That's a piece of wood I would love to see in person. It looks 3D From the balmy part of the Atlantic, Sam |

Sam: Think of the lighter colored areas as her skin. The upside down triangle of light wood at the top in the middle is her throat surrounded by the plunging neckline of the shirt, which then opens up to bare the midriff. I guess I'm just as sick as you guys. LOL Bill, tgo |

If that is the case, I don't think that "ban the bra" thing is working out too well. |

And I thought I was losing it seeing the AlemBird and the black helicopters! I can't see the girl, this wood is just other-worldly, some real Martian wood. JeanLuc, regarding a rectangular instrument for this singular piece of cocoB, wouldn't it make the ULTIMATE Bo Diddley? J o e y |

I don't recall seeing cocobolo with such a wide variety of colors. I'd LOVE to have that piece. Nice find, Steve! |

Since it's already sliced to laminate thickness, we'd probably store this between two thicker boards, secured with some c-clamps. The main thing you want to do is keep it from changing moisture too rapidly so you don't get cracking or checking, so keeping it in the house with temperatures and humidities that suit you are probably fine. Keep it away from heating vents or in the direct path of your a/c vents. The weight or pressure from the clamps will keep it from "potato-chipping out," and that is a technical term. It's a lovely board, reminds a bit of Ghost Crow, which started out as this board. |

Curiosity question -- do you know how long ago these boards were dressed to that thickness? As much as they are admirable, if this was recent I'd daresay you are going to have some color change soon. Not that it would be a bad thing! --J |
