I have a nightmare.
I bought my Fourth set of alembic activator pickups in 1998/99 to assemble a "workingman's" custom 5 String bass with a Warmoth neck. I had the neck and pickups sent direct to a guitar builder, who, with my money, promptly had a nervous breakdown and dissapeared. Monday, I finally tracked him down, and to my surprise he was sane, married and still had the neck and pickups, even in the boxes they were sent in!
Now the problem: I thought I had ordered MXY5/6's and the pickups are MXY's (3.5 inches wide) and I imagine its "just a little bit late" to exchange them.
I dont know the internal MXY's magnets width, but can they "see" a standard five string's spacing?
Also, they no longer have screws or foam in the box. How are they best mounted? can anyone suggest screw sizes Etc??
Thanks, D.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

Hi Dinos;

You don't need foam. Here is a post about the type of screws used. You can find the screws here. The short screws go under the pickup and the long screws on top. The short screw will be diagonally across from each other. There is a description of how the pickup mounting system works here.

Heck, if the pickups are unused and test fine, I'll exchange them - but you'll have to pay the return freight and the slight difference in price between the 4 and 5 string sizes.

The pickup doesn't care how many strings are over it, as long as the maximum string spread doesn't exceed 2.75 inches over the bridge pickup.

MXY 4 should be 4.11 inches wide, the 56 woiuld be 5 inches. 3.5 is closer to a Jazz pickup.

Call me next week at 707 523 2611 and I'll help you make the arrangements for exhange.

Thanks Mica! I've been looking all over the place for a post that mentioned the maximum string spread!

wow!
hey thanks, I will call.... I'm stunned.

By 3.5 inches, I mean the top portion that appears to hold the magnet, not the base (104mm).

one pickup is unwrapped, the other is still in the original plastic bag w/ tape around the middle. Shipping date was 2-25-99. The seem to remember purchase was in my name, By Mastercard, and the signature on the customs form (I was living in Canada) reads like "Sasha King". I bought 2 sets - a PJ/PVF-2 ( which was installed at the time) and the MXY/PVF-2
Thanks! I look forward to speaking w/ you.
