I just finished a GREAT book that will appeal to anyone who has an interest in acoustic guitars, vintage guitars, lutherie, or waiting a long time for a custom guitar to be built. (That should cover some of the denizens of these here parts). It's called "Clapton's Guitar" by Allen St. John, though it has little to do with Clapton. It is a non-fiction read about Wayne Henderson, guitar player and builder extraordinaire. Henderson lives in Rugby, VA, pop. 7 and has built about 10 guitars a year for 30 years. He models his instruments after vintage Martins and only charges $1500 each, but you may have to wait forever. Clapton waited about 10 years. The book follows the author as he cajoles Wayne to complete two identical guitars, one for Clapton, and one to be auctioned off for charity. It is a quick read, well written, and offers an informative and entertaining glimpse inside Wayne's shop as he builds these guitars. It is very educational about lutherie and just plain enjoyable! Two big thumbs up! Here's a link to the author's site with more info: http://allenstjohn.com/index2.php?p=Books Bill, tgo |
