Vince was a really down-to-earth nice guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and even got to jam with him. He covered a wide range of music - many forget that before the Dead he did some great stuff with the Tubes. I'll be singing one for him this afternoon at a party in the coastal mountians my band is playing.

"like a steam locomotive, rolling down the track. He's gone. He's gone, and nothing's gonna bring him back. He's gone"

Farewell Vince.

:-( What a shame..... He played down the road from me a couple of time last year, using Gent Treadly as his backup band.... The shows were low-key, but well attended and musically intense~ it was obvious he was giving it his all.

I hope you're at peace Vince.

Oh Noooooo,
The Tubes are one of my all time favorite bands and when Vince started to play with the Dead it was a dream come true. This just bums me right on out since I am finding out he passed on my birthday no less.An amazing talent that will be missed by many.
Fare thee well oh my brother, fare thee well.

The Tubes are one of my all time favorites as well. Vince and Michael Cotten did some amazing stuff with them. Personally, I don't get the whole Dead thing (never did like them), but I'm sure his contributions to them were equally amazing. He will be sorely missed for sure.

this is sad......having to fill brents shoes was soemthing few could do and the apparent chill the dead put on him after jerry died no longer surprises me. sometimes i wonder if weir feels anything but a bulge in his wallet.

Reading how the others in the band treated Vince after Jerry's death, let alone the Rattdog incident, makes me DAMN glad I'm not a dead head. It seems to me those guys who treated Vince like that are d*ckheads, not deadheads. I guess we now know why Phil Lesh didn't know Alembic was still in business. Out of touch with reality.

Talk to ya later, Vince. I don't want to hear it again tonight.

I'm probably the most illiterate person here vis-a-vis the Dead, the whole ensuing follow-on jam band scene.

I never knew of Mr. Welnick, but these posts prompted me to do a little searching around the net to 'catch up'.

I've been around way too much death and misery this year, and for this poor soul to have battled cancer, lung disease, substance abuse, and evidently an emotionally-crushing boot-over-the-fence from the surviving Dead crew, is a really bleak picture that's truly heartbreaking.

God Rest His Soul.

This is a very touchy subject indeed! Regardless of what may or may not have happened, and who or whom did what to who, Vince Welnick was a true member of the (IMHO) greatest musical institution ever, a great musician and just plain good guy and, as such, he has my ultimate respect.

RIP, Vince!

Flax,

There is at least one factual error in Phil's post. Vince's first couple of shows were without Bruce. Phil incorrectly states that Vince's first 'solo' show was after Horsby had 'moved on.' As to the rest of it.....

Vince's story with the band has been a reality check for all those that love the remaining Dead. It's not pretty.

There was a nice tribute to Vince on David Gans' Dead to the World radio broadcast from June 14. At just after 1:34:00 of the stream is an interview with Weir and a cut (Welnick's "Long Way to Go Home") from his recent Ratdog appearance at the Health and Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa last weekend.

Wow! This is an ugly story that keeps getting uglier all the time. This is a no-win situation that's spiraling out of control. I feel sorry for Vince and all his loved-ones as the muckraking is in high gear. It also casts the remaining Dead members in a questionable light.

Can't we all just get along guys and make great music together before it's too late to do so? I thought old age was supposed to bring wisdom? Apparenty, it hasn't for the GD family. Pity.
