It's a Gibson ES...355? I just bought a Guitar Greats DVD and happened to have just watched that Vid, it's from 72 in Europe, I think.

Bobby has played both a Gibson ES-335 and an ES-345. On Europe '72 gigs he was using the 345. You can tell the difference between these models by the rotary "chicken head" tone adjusting switch. 335's don't have em, 345's do. Also, Bobby's 335 had a stop tailpiece, while his 345 had a trapeze tailpiece. Both tailpieces were available on both models.

Addendum: After looking at another picture, I believe Bobby's 335 also had the trapeze tailpiece.

I'm talking about 1972, long before Ratdog.

Last time I saw Ratdog, Bob was playing a few guitars. A Tele, a Modulus hollowbody (blue), his Ibanez Cowboy Fancy, and a Yairi acoustic. I haven't seen the video, when was it shot? What does the guitar look like?

Peace

I do love that cowboy fancy, I would love to get one. It is the only guitar that Bob Weir uses that I think is completely awesome.

I saw him playing, I think, on a VH-1 interview or something and it looked like he along with the band Ratdog were playing in the TV studio. Since then I have seen the song pulled out as a video. It's just some kinda weird (but I think cool) looking semi hollow body or hollow body with an odd body shape. (I really enjoyed hearing about the Dead videos. I understand Bob has an unusual taste in guitars, not your norm through the years, so to speak.) Anyway, I saw the show, saw the guitar and I have never seen one like it and was just curious. I have not been able to find anything online that identified the ax. Someone here will certainly know. By the way, I was at a riverfront restaurant/bar in Paducah, Ky., a few days ago and the guy there has a neat assortment of guitars on display, including one of 500 ES-325s that were ever built (at least that's what his placard said.) Thanks........

David:

If you're referring to the blue semi-hollow with the lightning bolt shaped "F holes" that Weir currently uses as his main axe, it is a custom Modulus.

There's an interesting story behind Weir's telecaster. I couldn't remember if it was posted here, but, Holy Alzheimers, Batman! I found that I had posted it myself: http://alembic.com/club/messages/449/19983.html
