What's everyone using in their preamps?

I haven't changed the tube in my F1-X, but I will soon.

I also just put a JJ Tesla long plate in my SWR Baby Blue II. The JJ sounds great, very full and warm. The amp seems a bit punchier in the mids now. Barring any super rave reviews here, I will probably order another for the F1-X.

I would also look over at TalkBass for reviews on preamp tubes. There's been a lot of good discussion on those forums, including a couple tube shootouts.

I have tried a bunch of different tubes. My least favorite was the Groove Tube brand. Yuck. VERY harsh midrange, kinda honky. Right now I have a set of Sovtec tubes in my F2. They are used, I got them from a guitar player that did not like the sound of them. I remember him describing them as sounding "stiff". Whatever that means. But in my Alembic preamp the sound wonderful. I don't know if it is because they were broken in by a guitarist or what, but they are perfect.
