One of the Pink Floyd founding fathers, Sydney is dead at age 60. The AP story is here: http://apnews.excite.com/article/20060711/D8IPRAD8A.html Sad news indeed! RIP, You Crazy Diamond! |

I just heard this morning. Syd Barrett was the biggest sound influence on the group with which I grew up. I'll never forget the first time I heard the Madcap Laughter album, not to mention Piper at the Gates of Dawn. |

Saw the AP piece. In naming the original band members, they listed David Gilmour & didn't include Roger Waters! Way to get your "facts" in order guys. I have a picture of Syd riding his bike posted on my refrigerator...taken in his post Floyd years. Yes, it has a basket, a bell that rings & things to make it look good...time to break out the vinyl. I rather admired Syd for generally eschewing humanity. Smart lad. His music, as it has all this time, remains. As it should be. |

It is sad that he passed away and had a tough life, but I think that David Gilmor made Pink Floyd the incredible group that it is. I much perfer his song writing over Sids. Of course I am not meaning to take away the influence Sid had in starting PF going in the direction it did. ... ... Flame away! |

While I liked Syd and am sorry at his passing, I pretty much agree with Spliffy. I was really annoyed at Roger Waters' attempt to cash-in on the whole "people who lead Pink Floyd go *insane*" bit in the late '70s as well. There used to be a bunch of concert tapes floating around where he would scream at the crowd, things like "stop fighting" and other over-the-top-geez-aren't-I-nuts stuff.. I think Syd really did set the stage for what was to come later, imho, but it took Gilmour to pull it off. And some would argue (an old GF of mine, for instance) that the early Syd Floyd totally beat the crap out of the non-Syd Floyd. We're getting old, folks... John (who is very careful with that ax) |
