Will this idea catch on?

It seems like a good idea, but I just don't see it happening.

Well... You still have to find the instrument before you can scan it...

... the point being that when the police find stolen goods, and they are bugged with the chips, it should be easier for the legitimate owner to claim his belongings.

It sounds like it might be worth while. It doesn't cost all that much and might allow for reduced insurance costs.

Carvin offers it as a factory option. I think I started a thread here a couple of years ago about adding it to Alembic's options list. If I remember, it didn't go over too well for reason(s) that escape me at the moment.

Gibson has been doing it with the reissue Les Paul for years now.

As expensive as some vintage pieces have gone, it's a wonder they don't include a LoJac built into the case!

Wish Gibson had installed it on my '73 Les Paul - stolen from my apartment in Victoria, B.C. But then, if I'd recovered the '73, I wouldn't have bought the black Les Paul Standard at Valley Arts in Los Angeles in '79, and wouldn't have gotten the great deal that I got for buying the Stingray bass at the same time as the black Standard, and, well... things just wouldn't have been the same.
