The 'Live at Fillmore East' Allmans with the original lineup are just unreal. The reissue 'Deluxe Edition' on 2 CDs combines 'Live' with the live tracks from 'Eat a Peach' and a few extra tracks from those dates, and has the 'Mountain Jam' in one piece, uninterrupted. BackStory: I recently bought a copy of Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' at Walgreen's of all places, in one of those $5.99 cut-out bins. Just didn't seem right, somehow . . . any way, one of the sets of liner notes was by Robert Palmer, the former Rock/Pop Critic of the NY Times. He went to those Allman/Fillmore dates as they were recorded. He was undestandably taken with Duane, the only rock guitarist he felt was on a level of the Jazz greats in his improvisation. Duane went on to tell RP that he had basically only listened to 'Kind of Blue' and Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' for the last two years, to the exclusion of anything else. I always listen to these tracks and his man-handling of Eric Clapton on 'Layla' and always wonder what might have been had he lived. J o e y |
