Jeff..

I can't imagine how frustrating that must be. For what it's worth, I'm really sory to hear it. As I've said before, the DW was really what pushed me over the edge (who am I kidding; it lured me from a mile off!) into ordering my own custom. I hope you get your baby back soon.

P.S.
What if they just let it sit in a vat of the liquid finish for a week? ..."Soak up THIS, cocobolo!"

Dude, that absolutely sucks (no pun intended).
If the bass keeps absorbing this spray, will it not end up weighing a ton?
I am still hoping this issue ends for you soon.

Flax:

Bummer. I just checked the Vegas odds, and the Scooter Tribute is now a 5-2 favorite to visit the East Coast first! Maybe they should start poking around inside the Wolf looking for the world's smallest black hole ... where can all this finish be going? In the great scheme of things, may this problem be your worst problem. One possible silver lining: If it's ready in October and the A's make the play-offs, you can fly out to pick her up and I'll get you to a play-off game.

spoke to val today
its not so much that its sucking the finish
its not allowing the finish to adhere to the wood due to the oilyness of this coocoobolo
- he said they have never had a piece of coco behave like this and they may opt to go with an oil finish instead if it continues to behave so rudely- now if someone knows a oil finished bass in here..... show me the way please

Just postulating here, but since the rest of the bass isn't afflicted (just the area around the inlay), I wonder if it isn't the edge of the cutout for the inlay leaking oil.

I wonder is there would be a good way to seal that, e.g. superglue it.

Maybe they already did.

That's terrible, I hope the wood starts letting the finish hold. If not, I bet the wolf would look just as mean with an oil finish.

Have you discussed a nitro finish? I had great luck drying nitro on cocobolo when nothing else would work. It's less durable, to be sure, but maybe on par with oil.

Flax:

I visited DW and Scooter today. The Tribute looks just awesome, absolutely LOVE the wood. Wolf, as always, is quite the looker too. Susan told me they would like to avoid the oil finish on cocobolo as it isn't nearly as protective with the dark oily woods.

Probably a stupid idea, but if nitro seals the cocobolo, then can't they start with layers of nitro and cover that with the regular finish?

Another hare-brained idea - the problem area is the outer border of the inlay, right? As it seems to be related to the varying levels of absorption between neighbouring materials, perhaps they could add an outline with a contrast wood, or perhaps a ring in silver or brass or something - just to change the transition.

Jeff,

If you go with nitro, don't ever tell the TSA, or you won't be able to get on the plane. It just sounds dangerous!

Of course oil is a fluid...

At this point in time it seems strange that Alembic did not just replace the top laminate that is giving you the trouble? You spend thousands on a custom bass and you have to endure this crap! Yes I know it is the wood and Alembic are doing what they can but if the wood is not taking in the finish the first 50 times, why would anyone think it will do it after the next 50 times.
Enough is enough!

Flax,

I was at the Mothership today, and took these photos of the Dire Wolf. It looks to me like the finish is holding at this point, but I am not the expert. It looks beautiful, smooth, and like new. I didn't take it off the wall, but looked at it closely. Hopefully the problem is solved, and the Wolf will be back on it's way to you soon. Just wanted to share the pics.

There will be "the fight of the titans" when Dire wolf comes back home. Jeff has this gorgeous Tribute bass on order so ...let's see, which bass will be the favourite? Obviously ...he will not be able to play two basses the same time ...though ....I've seen Michael Manring do that.
Time to practise new chops Jeff!

That's fantastic news Jeff. Let's hope that's the problem solved. I'm expecting to see a whole bunch of basses hit Ebay next week when you decide you don't ever want to play anything but Alembic. Dibs on the NS ;-)

Jeff:

Great news on the Wolf. I saw it on Tuesday. Looked real good - no bubbles. You're not going to sell the titty bass, are you? Have you thought about hanging onto the Steinberger for airline travel?

It's great that oil didn't have to happen. I can't believe that oil and an inlay would have worked well long term. Any oiled bass I've had has always darkened over time. The inlay should stay so much more vibrant for years with a proper sealing coat.
