I acquired this bass from Jeff (Flaxattack) a few months ago with the intention of doing an early-style Alembic conversion on it. I added Darkstar pickups and a nickel-plated Alembic-type bridge and tailpiece from Michael Dolan, who is a former Alembic luthier. It turned out nicely, I think, and wanted to share. The sustain and string-to-string consistency are greatly improved. I haven't had a chance to play it live yet, but shold this weekend. It sounds great through headphones, though.

I'll post an update on how it sounds through the big rig (and hopefully some better pics) as soon as I can.

Thanks for looking!

My wife affectionately refers to the Rogue as "Your girlfriend." I guess I should let her in on the idea about the custom Jazz Elan eh?

I've cleaned up the bridge and tailpiece, strung those Chromes you got for me and lowered the action to right where I like it. Beautiful sound, great feel. I wish I hadn't waited so long to get an Alembic. Thanks again.

I'm watching the Dragonfly FTC and absolutely drooling- you'll be a proud papa soon!!

Charles,

Are the bridge and tailpiece shiny new brass or chrome plated?

They are nickel plated. Don't know why they look brassy in the bottom pic. I will try to get some natural-light pics today.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it!

Must be the reflection of the carpet. The binding seems to have the same. Could be the digital camera with a greenness overload.

Toby, glad to hear it's doing you right...I bet it is an absolute monster with flats through a tube amp!

I think you're right, Adriaan...the binding is a bit yellowish in real life, though, too.

Here are some more with better light.

That finish sure is shiny! You can see my yard and my Blazer in the top one, and my door with the kid's jacket on the knob in the bottom one.

I've had a chance to play it out a couple of times. In one room it sounded great, and I played it the whole night. The sustain is much better, but it still sounds like a hollowbody with flats. In the other room, it was just too boomy, even with the F1X bass knob on zero. I cut out a bunch of bottom with the Superfilter, but then wasn't left with much tone. Instead of spending lots of time to get a sound, I just played the Modulus instead. Interestingly, going back and forth between the 30" 4 and the 35" 5 is much less of an issue for me than switching between the Modulus and a Fender. The string spacing is very similar at the bridge, so it doesn't throw off my right-hand timing at all. I still have to use my eyes to guide my left hand for any major position changes on the short scale, though.
