I just bought this guitar. It's a late seventies (I think) Matao neck through. There is very little information about the Matao company. It seems they made OK knock-offs ("lawsuit models") of Strats and Les Pauls, but also did a few like this one. The neck is a double octave with brass nut and the strings go through the body. Two humbuckers, non active, but another I see on the web has a big cavity designed for active pups: http://staff.washington.edu/ptewson/matao.html I wonder if it was inspired by Alembics of the day? The drill is for jamming with Billy Sheehan. Just keep it away from your hair! (from Billy's rap in BassDay '97) Mike |

Naw, I just play the drill for old times sake these days. You know, the first song I learned, growing up just across the border, was this heavey metal riff song (this was back in the day of illegal, mega watt, across the border radio) that just had this one riff. It was the only thing I could play at the time. Remember, this was back in the days when the 45 hit song was king, all 3 minutes of it. Come to think of it, this song I learned was kind short, only 60 seconds, but it rocked! It got a lot of airplay and was by this obscure group called 'The Americam Broadcasting Company', or something like that. Man, I could jam to that for hours! They don't make em like they used to! I used to have a Matao bass with crazy electronics in the early 80s. It had built in compression and expansion as well as active eq. I put some early EMGs in there and yanked out the stock stuff and it sounded pretty good. I even built my own version of a superfilter and stuck it in there. It sounded great when it worked! It had the tree of life inlay up the fingerboard as well. Edwin |
