I am looking to put together a little rig for practicing and recording (guitar) and I am looking for some suggestions. A friend of mine has a nice collection of small vintage Fenders that sound great and would fit the purpose perfectly, but I don't wanna go that route. I don't want a collector's peice is what I mean. For flexibility's sake I was thinking of going with a PowerBlock and a single cab. This way I could have more control over tone and also be able to upgrade to a bigger cab. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions about single cabs; budget is definatly an issue. I would also welcome any advice concerning small combos, as I haven't ruled that out. Cheers |

I really like my Aguilar GS112 if your looking for something portable and lightweight and somnething you can build on, look at what 112's are out there. If you are on a budget you can try Avatar cabinets they are great bang for the buck http://www.avatarspeakers.com/ - Tom |

Earcandy has several of their 112 cabs on ebay right now. The most recent went for only about $80, unloaded. Tim makes excellent cabs - check out the harmony-central reviews under guitar amps - almost perfect 10s. Here's a link to the Earcandy site: http://earcandycabs.com/ If you search ebay for "earcandy" you'll see the several "Boa" cabs he has up right now. Also, Crate sells a matching cab for the powerblock. I checked it out once at GC - seemed pretty nice and it has a strap for securing the powerblock inside while in transit. The powerblock is an incredible buy at it's current $99 price. Bill, tgo |

I can highly recommend the Phil Jones Bass, Briefcase. I bought one this summer and use it all the time for practicing at home. It is 100w and has a DI out and you can also connect an additional speaker if you want more umph. In addition you can install a 12v rechargeable sealed Lead Acid battery in order to use it away from the mains supply. It sounds great for the size and surprisingly the bass end is pretty tight even with the low B. You aren't gonna shake any windows with it but it has a great sound indoors. http://www.philjonesbass.com/ Jazzyvee |

Plus one for the GK. I was trying out a semi acoustic Bass at the weekend and the shop put me through the little GK 115. It has a very tight punchy sound and comes across as alot bigger than it looks. (didn't buy the bass though). Graeme |

You guys all play guitar thru your bass rigs?!? Phylo, would you be using the PowerBlock in tandem with a preamp or pedalboard? Would you prefer a speaker that breaks up easy like a Celestion, or something with a stronger rating like a JBL or EV? Ive always had good luck finding used 1x12 cabs relatively cheap ($100-$150, Mesa, Marshall, Crate...) good luck! |
