years ago, I read somewhere that many double bass players acted as clowns on stage during the 1950's. They were barely audible in a band before there was amplification, so they had to show off to justify their appearance ;-) I haven't seen anybody like this guy before, and Georgie is right: TOP POLL ! Hi John, Pardon my ignorance, but what is FARK?? I've played this video about 6 times, and sent it to all my musician friends-----it's just superb!!! Who is the Star that is playing this? Must watch it again to cheer myself up a bit as It's the usual high winds and serious rain here in Scotland. George |

George, Fark is www.fark.com, which is essentially a compilation of submitted links that is continuously updated. They typically have news story links days before the national media runs them. John |

Seen that footage before, pretty funny. The film must have been scanned from the backside - the bass player could be a lefty, but the marimbas are definitely in reverse. |

"scanned from the backside" sounds like an excellent band name! |

John (811952) - from your perspective, can you tell how deep the ladies' dresses drop on that side? ;-) |

Unfortunately, no. They're all my parents' age by now anyway, so that's just /wrong/! :0 edited because my grammar isn't so good (Message edited by 811952 on December 11, 2006) |

Is that really the sound an upright bass makes when you slap the back of it? |

If you slap it hard enough.. ;) Maybe that's the sound of all the bones in his hand shattering? |

Research results: The bass player appears to be Frank DeNunzio Sr. And apparently "original Soundie films were printed backwards so that they could appear correct when played in the Panoram machine (an early film jukebox)". source |

If you watch this, look to the right of the Youtube listings and go down 4 or 5 till you see the same thing with something like "brown" in the title. It's played the RIGHT way! He's still a STAR!!!!!!! george |

Hey this post is full of great info! Thanks for the hilarious clip The vid reminded me of a Band I had at one of my Charity Benefits many years ago called "Deep Dish Pan". They are a steel drum band, and the best song they did was "Cantina" from Star Wars. |
