New issue with Patitucci on the cover...page 18, the story on Ivan Bodley. Looks like an Exploiter or Spider off to the side. Not mentioned under the adjacent "Gear" heading. Another example of the previously purported BP Alembic cover-up conspiracy?

It's a bit hard to tell from the picture but it appears to be an 8 string too. You would think that would've been enough to get it at least at the bottom of the gear list.
There's been a lot of speculation on this board about why BP acts like Alembic doesn't exist. It's a little like the Cremona Luthier Club forgetting to invite Stradivari to the summer barbeque. The only time they mention Alembic is when it's associated with someone they can't ignore, like Stanley.
Whatever!

Probably 'cuz Alembic doesn't spend lotz of money in advertising dollars, like most of the "featured" basses companies do.....

Over here in the UK we must be a month behind as I just bought the latest copy to hit our shelves and the cover feature is BX3.

Most US monthlies seem to be published one month ahead of the published month. Whatever for?

I've often wondered that myself. It's been that way as far as I can remember.

It's so you can get that "Live in the Future...Now!" feeling.

I was a charter subscriber to Bass Player when it first came out. I was a subscriber for years too. They used to have a great magazine but then the ads out numbered the articles. The "gear reviews" seemed more like ads than unbiased opinions.

I can find plenty of info and good reviews free on the "net".

Guitar Player too, in fact all the guitar magazines I've read never met a product they didn't like.

I know the answer to the "month ahead" question 'cause I'm an ex-comic collector.

It's simple. The idea is that you put out the, say, "January" issue (by which I mean the issue that actually COMES OUT in January with FEBRUARY on the indicia IN ORDER TO TRICK THE PERSON WHO PULLS OF THE "OLD" MAGAZINES to LEAVE IT THERE FOR ANOTHER MONTH.

It's that simple. And silly. But they've been doing it for years! So it probably works.

Yeah, as I heard it put:

The date on the magazine is when it's supposed to come off the rack.

By the way, I have the utmost contempt for Bass Owner magazine -for the reasons others have stated, and others.

For me, they have no integrity, and no relevance. They seem to pose or represent themselves as some authority or frame of reference -but while they "talk the talk, they don't walk the walk."

And the whole ignoring Alembic thing... that in itself discredits them.

For clarification, what I mean is, they have no objectivity... they show this very clearly.

A bass guitar magazine that ignores Alembic is about as credible as a sports car magazine that pays no attention to Porsche and Ferrari.

Its almost like fetish for us Alembic lovers. I just watched a bit of JT's tribute concert and kept straining to catch Jimmy Johnson on the tube. (he sounded amazing in the mix) I've made my peace that most "zines" don't cover or feature Alembics. So I check ebay every day and this forum. C'est la guerre!

Danno.
is that show worth buying? I picked it up in HMV last week then put it down again as I wasn't sure if JT appears on it. A brief review would be a great help.
Thanks

It was a lot of artists performing James Taylor's songs, for James Taylor. Sting, Bonnie Raite, Alison Krauss, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Sheryl Crowe, David Crosby, Jackson Brown and the list goes on. Steve Gadd on Drums, JJ on bass etc. If you love JT it might be nice to have. I love his music but I'm not crazy about all the performers and teir performances of his tunes. The bass sounded awesome on my home system.

I saw it on TV and I agree with Danno. I wasn't crazy about all of the performances (although I absolutely loved one of them). To reinforce what Danno said, JT's band, and thus Jimmy, backs all of the performers. And even on TV, Jimmy's bass sounded great (old-timey over-the-air reception, but it does go through a nice stereo with subwoofer). James sings one or two songs at the end.

Thanks Dave and Danno. I guess it's probably worth a trip out to HMV tomorrow to try and pick it up. I was inspired to watch Pull Over last night when I got home. Nothing like some JT and a nice Pinot Noir to Chill things out a bit;-)

Hm, thanks for the pinot noir suggestion. It's that age-old question: what wine goes best with James Taylor?

The Retro-Rama article in April's BP spotlights the 1976 Series I. Quote from Dave Pomeroy "We all owe a debt to the visionaries who bravely blazed a trail deep into the future of bass!"
