No, not on the same stage. Been on a live music binge lately, thought I'd write about it. Thur 3/22 Willie and Merle at Radio City. Great. Can never get enough Willie. Love that guitar sound. Like a nylon strung fretless with crazy active electronics, he just strums away all nice and in the backround and then MWAH loud as hell right through a chord change. Dynamic. Next night, Stanley at the Blue Note. Expensive, but great. On the upright (although, interestingly, a couple tunes on an AEB that was a Fender?). Anyway, upright, drums and piano. You guys would know the other two musicians but I'm too lazy to look them up right now. Well known drummer who I think plays with Stan a lot, woman on piano and singing. It's just cool to see Stanley rip those ridiculous School Days type runs on an upright. Another good band Sunday night for y'all south of the Mason Dixon- the North Mississippi All-Stars. Smooth bass player. Real smooth. Fun band, drew a nice crowd at Joe's Pub. And then before this all started I saw an instrumental hard-rock (maybe metal) supergroup (as in, all members were previously part of fairly popular groups) from LA that was really good, if you're into that sort of thing. Real long, slow crescendos (sp?), pretty heavy. They're called the Red Sparowes (that's how they spell it) and you can hear some of their stuff on their website. I think Danno and FC Spoiler would like it, anyway. Incidentally, I met my own little red sparrow at that show, and she accompanied me to Stan and took me to NM All Stars, so things are looking up in that regard. I'll try not to blow it like I blew that full step modulation at the end of the last tune. -JT | ||

Not to hijack too badly: Try the "Lee Ritenour: Overtime" DVD and/or CD. I think I reviewed it here in the past. Musicians on this are: Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Patrice Rushen, Ivan Lins, Chris Botti, Ernie Watts, Harvey Mason, Eric Marienthal, Alex Acuna, Anthony Jackson, Melvin Davis, Oscar Seaton, Barnaby Finch, Kenya Hathaway, Grady Harrell, Dave Carpenter, and Steve Foreman. Excellent musicianship with stellar sound and video (on DVD, of course). Not Stanley or Willie, but excellent anyway. | ||

Kmh, hi to you too. So last night I'm leaving work nice and late, walking by Rockefeller and I see all these metalheads on the street. What's going on? Heaven and Hell, Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio. Originally was going to be the only US show (they've since announced another, with Megadeth) and tickets sold out the day they went on sale. So I gotta go to the bar nearby and see what some of these guys are up too, end up drinking some with some older metal heads. Now I've never been a big RJD fan, but learned how to play bass on original Sabbath tunes, and after a few beers convinced myself this was my only chance. Long story longer, thirty minutes later and for fifteen bucks off face I'm in the SECOND ROW twenty feet from GEEZER FRICKIN' BUTLER! Might not be saying much, but one of the coolest nights I've had in a while. -Jack | ||

Good on ya Jack! I met the rep from DR strings at the Type O show friday and he told me about Geezers basses andchoice of coated strings. (Looks like I might have a string endorsement in the works) Type O was great by the way. | ||

I had a blast! Our 2nd guitar player quit and folks say we sound better and tighter. Plus there's more room for me now. Used my rig with the plx 3402 and clipped the svt but my Epi ul212 sailed on! So if any of you guys who are repulsed at the sight of a black Alembic, come to my gigs you won't be disappointed. And when we tour you'll be positively hurling at the 4 or 5 of them! | ||

No solid stuff yet, maybe Yurp this summer. You never know where we'll pop up. I forgot to mention the chicks slam dancin', sapphic experimentin', an aerola exposin' at the gig. ( I blame the ovary rattling low end) Go Stanley! Go Willie! |
